Unless your instrument cluster is significantly different from a '01 cluster, the clock/oil level area is an LCD panel attached with a ribbon. There is no light bulb. The LCD is powered through the ribbon. Chances are that the ribbon connection is going bad. Here is a picture (sorry it's not the best quality) of the clock panel that I removed from the instrument cluster that I used as a donor for my center panel.
Went to the Porsche dealer today and they think there is a bulb behind there. They want an hours labor to remove the cluster. Right now looking for a DIY on cluster removal. If it is just a bulb...I should be able to change that. Any link to a DIY for gauge cluster removal on a 996?
