Air Intake Mod - Schell or Fabspeed

Hi all, I want to increase the noise a bit in my 996 as the stock one isn't noisy at all.
I need to look at the speedo to realise that I am speeding! This was never the
case with my old '86.

Anyways, I am not looking for any performance gains here - purely cosmetic.
There seems to be a price difference between the Schnell hose pipe and the
Fabspeed one (including the cap) - $100 vs $225. Both seem to be easy DIY
installs, right? Sound-wise, is there any difference at all? I am not looking for
a DIY hose-pipe and hence am keeping only these two as my options.

PS: I think I have made my question clear and simple. I don't want to be the one
to spark off another debate on "cold air intakes" and other related stuff :)

I bought the DesignTek intake pipe from design911.co.uk which looks similar to the Schell intake.
It was about USD 111 excl shipping and took about 20 minutes to install.
I removed the bold to the airbox to be able to wiggle the intake pipe inplace.

Even though it looks purple it is actually blue and the plug in the airbox is alloy.

Gives a little more agressive sound during acceleration and makes the engine looks a little more tidy...

checkout maxspeedmotors too. Great to deal with. Really gave a nice sound at higher RPMs.

My opinion would be the fabspeed or the designtek as those eliminate the intake muffler completely. It seems to make sense to me to add more air volume in the intake.

I've recently added the Schnell sytem(bought from a fellow Rennlister for half of the retail price) to compliment a set of 3.6L FisterD modded cans on my 2000 Cab. I am quite happy with the results! The Fister cans go without saying, and the CAI added some nice additional intake music. The mods have greatly increased the driving pleasure of my car!

I have the Schnell with an exhaust on my car. There was no difference in sound since my exhaust is loud. According to my butt dyne, there was also no increase in horsepower or throttle response.

I have a Schnell in near new condition, PM me if you want it. I also have an optional cap if you want to eliminate the resonator box that I can throw in.

If you want more sound, address the mufflers. Check out the FisterD mod - best bang for the buck.

just took out a fabspeed and reinsalled the factory box, nothing noticeable sound or performance

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have purchased a Schnell intake kit that I found locally. I'll probably install it today or tomorrow. I'll update on the difference I see with it. Looking to have exhaust mods done later this year..

$5 air intake modification for 996

Items: One 1-1/2" Threaded PVC Male pipe plug (0.85-cents) wrapped 4x in electrical tap. One Oatey 33401 red 2" compression plug ($3.85); remove the wing nut an replace with a 5-1/16" nylon lock (0.65-cents) nut. Process: Remove air cleaner top and inside the 3-bolts holding in the resonator. Remove resonator & bolts and store in safe place when you sell the car. Take the Oatey and tighten with a 1/2" socket into the 2" hole on the top of the stock air intake box. Take the PVC plug and insert it nut first into the small 2" hose on the existing throttle body hose. The empty cavity in the PVC plug will now fit over the new Oatey 5-1/16" nut and the PVC Plug will stop at the tapper in the hose. Tighten clamp. Reassemble the air cleaner and turn the throttle hose down onto the Oatey so its touching & concealed. Tighten all clamps and screws and go. It will sound better above 5K-rpm and because more air flow is now available in the inside of the air cleaner box with the resonator removed, you will notice more response cause it breaths better. Plus you retain the cold-air intake pipe on the left of the air cleaner box for outside air.

Does anyone have a Snell or Fabspeed intake tube they want to get rid of? I have a bone stock 99 996.1 Cab. I know I could buy the parts at Home Depot and what not, but I don't trust that these parts will be a perfect fit, and I don't want to risk having something come apart or come off. I also don't want to buy a used one off EBay as it appears a bunch of those are old and marked up. I'm just looking for a hose for better sounding intake noise and the cap to cover the air box muffler/resonator.

You should get the k&n complete air intake, you get full cold air flow

That's even more expensive - $300+. And I don't like the maintenance part of the K&N. Too much oil is no good, too little oil is no good.
