Default Northern NJ shops for possible rebuild?

Well, the time has finally come for my '99 996 C2 Cab. After replacing the AOS and the valve gaskets, transfusions of almost a quart of Mobil1 every other day, enough redlines in 1st thru 3rd to keep it moving and not blow the clutch... she's finally called it quits after 124k. Starts, then dies immediately. Repeatedly. I could, theoretically, ride the clutch and keep it revving and rolling, but if I let up on the gas for even a second, she's done where I sit. At this point, it's just choking on its own lubricating vomit it seems. Not sure if it's that the seals are shot (though I'm guessing so), but it's clearly the end of the line for now... a few local garage guys all said I'm staring at a rebuild.

I've had work done on the 996 (and my 968 before it) by Gene at Autohaus and Tony at Performance Plus. Both were excellent. As this may very well not be a small, short, inexpensive job, and I do still want to keep this car for a few more years (at least until my wife won't divorce me over a 993 TT), I'd prefer to leave it in good hands. In a perfect world, I'd even add a few mods to liven it up a little while it's in there. Not sure of the approx. cost if it's indeed a rebuild that's necessary, though I'm dreading it.

Any thoughts on who might be best to handle this? No issues taking it back to Autohaus, don't believe Tony is still at PP, and not been able to vet recos for Powertech (though heard good things third-hand). If anyone has any experience with anyone specifically, helpful bits of advice ("start drinking heavily" is one I've heard of late), etc. I'd truly appreciate the info.

I can introduce you to my guy if you are interested. He is not a Rennlist sponsor so I would have to PM you his info.

I was satisfied with the work I had done at Powertech. Top notch shop, not cheap - but fair.

I use Gene at Autohause, but I would check with him, or anyone you decide to bring the car to, and make sure they are comfy doing 996 engine rebuilds. I think Gene is more of an air cooled 911 guy when it comes to engine rebuilds, but I could be mistaken).

Make sure they know about the updates for the while-they-are-in-there stuff (RMS, maybe IMS bearing, etc).

powertech did an ok job for me but i found them a bit pricey.

I use protosport in pompton plains, but from what I know, they focus more on air cooled and turbo stuff.

Gene at autohaus is good and the shop that Chao used gets good press from the guys I drive with, so you may want to look at them too.

I didn't do anything serious there, just routine service, but bodymotion looked decent as well.

Precision Motorsports in Califon NJ is another option. Will (Owner) and John are great to deal with.

I used Will for all my 944 repairs. I was sad when he left the Morristown location!

I owned one of their 944s. Spotless and perfect despite its age and odometer reading (above 250K).

Well, it's apart as we speak. Can be rebuilt, which is a good thing. The bad thing... estimate for the complete rebuild, from a 3.4 to 3.6, upgraded IMS bearing and all known updates, etc. etc. looks to be hovering around $15k.

Ouch.
