996 Turbo Alternator: Manual vs Tiptronic

What is the difference between the Tiptronic alternator & a manual (6-spd).

I have looked up the part online, and they all indicate that they are for an "automatic transmission". I have an 01 996TT with a 6-speed and they alternator took a dump on me. Is there a difference between the auto & manual??

6 speed has a de-clutch pulley to soften the possible inertia change between shifts.

If it is not bearing related you can put a new regulator/brush set in it for $100<

You're in the 996 NA forum.

But to answer your question on your turbo, the manual alternator has a pulley free wheel lock whereas the tiptronic does not have a free wheel lock.

The part number you need is 99760301201.

Genuine porsche $786 at porscheoemparts.com

Or aftermarket from autoatlanta.com at $334

you can do this if you want... but you will still have a 12 year old Alternator, its gotta come out anyways... get a Rebuild Unit :burnout:

Will the Tiptronic remans interchange with the manuals trans alternators if the pulley is changed? The Tiptronics are way less expensive and very readily available.

Thanks....

The Tiptronics are way less expensive and readily available. The 6-spd pulleys are available online for $50 and that would be a more cost effective repair.:crying:

Thanks

I know I am hopping on a VERY old post, but I am changing the alternator on my 2003 C4 Cab 996 with tip and noticed that I have a freewheel (or clutch) pulley on the current one. I know its not original (big "remanufactured" sticker on it), but if my auto/tiptronic is "supposed" to have a locked pulley, what can I do....? Is this an issue? Thanks in advance!

What's old is now new...
I just changed out the alternator in my 03 coupe.
I found this link to Pelican Part DIY very helpful. I think your answer is in there
Took me about 2 hours this morn.

Also some good info on 6Speed.

Thanks for the link! I was able to remove the old one in about 20 minutes, but the new one doesn't have the pulley on it. That's when I noticed that mine 03 C4 is supposed to have the "fixed pulley", but I have a "clutch pulley". I don't think I want to put the "wrong" pulley on the new alternator. But maybe it wouldn't matter...? Ugh....

I don't see how a pulley with a Sprag clutch would hurt in a TIP.
If you went the other way, IE: manual without sprag, you might throw belts, cause bearing wear??, or...
The sprag is there to allow the alternator to freewheel softening shock during upshifts.

Thanks fpb111! The car only has ~80k miles on it, so it seems a bit much that I would have to put another alternator in it already (the one in there now is not original). But, if all else is the same (voltage etc), then I will plug her in! Now I just have to remove that very interesting pulley....

Often it is the brushes in the regulator that wear/hang-up that cause the Alternator to quit.

More on Sprag:
The 6 speed has the freewheeling pulley, with a SPRAG clutch, to allow the alternator to freewheel and bleed off some inertia between 'abrupt' higher RPM engine speed changes. This helps to prevent belt shredding and or jumping ship. Tips are not as likely to have the more abrupt RPM changes between shifts so Porsche did not put the freewheeling pulleys on those alternators.

Awesome. Thanks again! I just had the old alternator tested, and it came back as GOOD! Not sure whats up now, but will repost in a new thread to keep it accurate... :(
