Default 2/4...really?

Those crazy Germans and their engineering. Just a worthless post and dumb observation but anyone ever notice the 2/4 on their gas gauge?

I just find it funny and haven't really noticed it til recently. I can't recall off the top of my head whether other car manufacturers have this or not. I think ROM(rest of the manufacturers) is 1/2. lol

Because it is too distracting to do math while driving 200kph on the autobahn?

I think it makes perfect sense. It stays consistent by telling you the number of sections on that gauge and where you are on but then again I am not that smart so...

Why wouldn't you also say that having 4/4 on full tank is silly? It should be "1" at full tank then "1/2" at half tank.

I have thought about that logic as well. I forgot to mention 4/4 since I rarely have the tank full and look that high. It's usually at less than a 1/4 most of the time since I'm always looking to race. lol

Running at less than 1/4 is bad for your fuel pump!

My 944 had 2/4 also, but had an R for refuel rather than an E for empty.

Fuel pump is in the gas tank and cooled by the gas,
low on gas the fuel pump runs hotter, wears out faster.

I'm aware of the general concept however I think that effect varies by different cars. I've been driving on quarter tank for the past 20 years with no pump failure so far with some cars seeing 150k. I'll take my chances.
