Thoughts on this deal?
I'm curious on your thoughts on this deal. 2003 Red Cab with Savanna beige interior. 34k Miles, 6sp, Bose, fab speed exhaust, new rear tires, hardtop, new struts. Car appears to be in excellent condition. Price $33.9k. Assume the PPI checks out and the car is as nice as it appears.

Not so much about the deal, cuz I know you know this is barely enuf info to say "yeah, go look." more about due diligence. I'm an opinionated sob regarding the 996. I had a 993 C4 lost in a flood and I'm not dun whining about that. Don't skimp on a ppi, though it will cost ya. That said. There are things that you cant suss out on a 996. No leak down or compression because you can't rip out the engine casually. All ya got is the engine computer. Perhaps front for oil change just to get a look at the filter for metal, though a pro metallurgist would have to analyze to discern lifters from IMS (if it's been enough miles to tell.) maybe just a simple ppi and budget for a 3rd party warranty (AAA or Warrantech, etc). I'm looking for warranty, too; just bought a special wishes 996 with 66K and decent provenance. Engine failed after 150 more miles - seller warranty covered that (Arlington Porsche, va, good people). Anyhow...
The way I tell my friends and wife, with a Porsche , you're starting from stupid; the challenge is not to get asanine. Good luck and enjoy.

James thanks for the response. $30k is what I had in mind also. The book value is much higher around $38k but it appears the market is in the $25k- $30k range.

IMHO, 30K may be a bit on the low side, depending on your location and history of the car. If you do get it purchased at that price, give yourself a big pat on the back.
Here in southeast Texas, a car such as you describe--with clean PPI and Carfax, full service records, and never been owned in snow/ice land (little/no roadsalt issues)--would be fairly priced at what the seller of "your" car is asking; somewhere in the 33-35K range.
Do the research to be sure you understand the background of the exact vehicle your planning to purchase. There are a bunch of excellent 996s out there, so don't get rushed into a hasty buy, or into a purchase of a questionable vehicle.
In any event, budget for doing the work James (Optical TDI) suggests, either when the clutch needs replacing or as a preventative measure if your prone to IMS worries.
If you do buy the car--drive it, it needs it. 35K on a 8-9 year old car? It's barely broken in!

Logray, You got it in one I made the ipaqrat handle in '98 as one of the first reviewers and commentators on Compaq's then new/developmental iPaq. Drew a little rat avatar and everything. Also a play on, "I, pack rat" for my ginourmous collection of obsolete handheld computing gadgets. Just got in the habit of using iPaqrat everywhere.
When I got my 993 c4 6 years ago, I signed up on ALL the boards. There's a lot of high quality lurking on this board. You are all very diverse and well rounded. But I don't write about the cars much, like I used to about IT. It's all been kinda academic until now. I hang out with mechanics and collectors, shoot photos, drive in a few events. I've read Excellence, Total 911, 911&PW, GT Porsche and Christophorus cover to cover every month for 7 years... But NOW I have to actually work on my own 996.

Welcome ipaqrat. I used to be a big Ipaq user back in the day, really thought that was the **** back then.... Now it sits it its cradle on my desk and use it as a flashlight once in a while. It's a very expensive flashlight.
