Default WEVO 986 Engine Mount for a 996 Manual Transmission

About a year and a half ago, I replaced the transmission mount in my 99' 996. The old one had cracked/failed. I sourced a new OE mount from pelican and pressed it in.

In looking at the condition of the new mount, the rubber seems to have gone all wobbly again. It's not cracked, but it doesn't seem to be as stiff as it should be. I pulled out the old broken mount and sure enough the rubber seems to be nice and firm still (albeit separated in a few places around the outside race).

I'm looking at the WEVO semi solid engine mount as a possible replacement.

Any opinions on this?

Looks like a safe bet once you have your engine balanced!

Is there a way to pull out the old tranny mount without dropping the tranny? I was thinking about upgrading mine.

The pic looks good. However, I recommend upgrading the engine mounts too in order to "balance" the front and back of the engine/tranny.

On a manual and early tips, the trans has to come out. And you need several tons worth of force to press the old mount out...

I've considered doing the engine mounts as well, but I'm really not looking for race performance here or solid mounts. The OE engine mounts probably have about 20-25k on them, they are still in great shape after I replaced them 3 or 4 years ago.

What is attractive to me about this mount is that it does not have to be pressed in, so in theory, if this the new one ever goes bad (hah), it can be replaced without dropping the transmission. Plus it isn't going to "give" quite as much as the OE rubber piece of crap... which is attractive in case I get into DE's.

Are there even any semi-solid engine mounts for the 996 out there? I've seen the solid ones...

These RS mounts are semi-solid: http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...e=996EXHAUST36

I'm not sure how that orange piece is going to go in. The early 996's have that metal surrounding that needs to be pressed out. That means the tranny needs to be dropped. Will the orange piece inside the metal housing?

No, you have to press the old mount out (first post). This means dropping the transmission (4th post).

Then the orange piece slides in.

Yea thats what I was afraid of...I wish there was an alternative to put a mount in without pressing the old one out.
Mine's currently filled with silicone and it's held up well so far but just thinking of what to do if/when the silicone fails..

Doesn't Wevo make their semi-solid for a 996? Another option is to use OEM TT mounts which is what I have....

Yeah they prob. do... but I think I'm more interested in a hybrid for now, OE fluid engine mounts with the WEVO trans mount... will this cause me trouble or should I go all poly? The car already has a pretty stiff ride with eibach sways and PSS10s (not that I mind that). I guess it can't get a whole lot stiffer than that, huh?

+1 for the RS mounts. I don't have any experience with the Wevos, but wiser people told me that they're a more aggressive (read harder) mount, better suited to track life. The RS mounts are civilized enough for the street.

And mcipseric, good eye. They are one and the same. I think they even go back to the 964.

This there a re-enforced engine carrier recommendation for the 996 if you go to a more aggressive motor mount?

Not for these, no. I seem to recall that a harder engine mount than the RS requires some kind of support for the transaxle, too, but this honestly isn't my expertise.

I think that was a typo and you meant to say "is there", not "this there" right? If you meant "if", I'm not aware of any other engine carriers for the NA engine, but certainly there are solid engine mounts available in addition to the semi-solid's that have been pointed out.

If by "this" you mean the second pic in the first post that is a boxster engine mount carrier. The engine mount for the boxster inside of that carrier is actually the same for a 996 manual transmission.
