Engine serial number decode 'SAT'
 

I have a replacement engine (replaced in 2010) from porsche with the serial as m96/03SAT665. Anyone have any idea what the S is for? "AT" means re-manufactured and 5 indicates the engine is from 2005, but no clue as to the S

The coding between your engine type and the beginning of the serial number are remanufactured engine code AT and the X51 designation 'S'. The next three digits of the serial number reflect the year of the engine.

66W is 1998
66X is 1999
66Y is 2000
661 through 665 is 2001 through 2005, respectively

your engine type is m96/03
"S" is X51 designation
"AT" designates remanufactured or Austauschmotor
665 designates 2005

Thank you, I was trying understand as much as possible and to confirm that my engine was replaced like for like with regards to the X51.
I have a 2004 anniv which came with the x51 pkg std.

Stephen, using 66X as an example, does that mean the rebuilt motor was manufactured in 1999, or that it is designed for a 1999 car?

If it has 66X still in it, it means the original engine was built in 1999, regardless of whether it was re-built or not.

logray is correct. In the example below, the serial still contains 66x on a engine rebuilt in Nov 2004

If I can ask one more follow on-question. . . Since StephenB's motor was built in 2005 and mine was built in 2005, do they have the IMS / RMS upgrades that the factory was using at the time of manufacturer? Specifically, in late 2005, new M96 motors had the last IMS design. Would my motor also have that?

Yes, they probably have the non-serviceable bearing (without complete teardown) if they were re-manned in 2005. Before 2005 I haven't read about any examples of the larger bearing being used by P.

The good thing is the new larger bearing is about as strong as the original dual row...

"revised, larger single-row IMS bearing, identifiable by a larger 22mm nut in the center of the IMS hub flange. This uses a very large 6305 single-row bearing with a load rating similar to the dual row 6204 bearing compared to the earlier single row 6204 bearing which has about 2/3rds the load rating of the 6305." Hi, my 03 996 C2 received a new Porsche long block in Sept,2013. Trying to figure out the IMS bearing used. Engine # m96/ 03a166569511 although the sales slip shows m96/05 . Confusing to say the least. Porsche charged this gut 28,900 for the LB engine.
Any help appreciated.
