Help with identification of oil?
Just got back from a DE and was doing my after track day clean up and inspection.
Looking under the tranny, I see what looks like dried oil (tranny?).
There is a ~2" diameter pipe directly above the tranny.
The oil(?) is on the surface of this pipe facing downward.
Anyone have insight on identifying this?
2001, 996 cab with manual tranny.
TIA.

Trans oil would not dry. Looks like an overzealous application of cosmoline that may have had some solvent on it at one time. Pick some off, is it waxy?

Frank,
I picked at it and does have the texure of cosmoline.
I know there is cosmoline down there but none of it looks like "that".
The odd thing is that it's looks like a lot and as if it was exposed to such a localized area.
Anyhow, thanks for the input.

Noticed the same typ og thing on mine today. I'm thinking its comming from the vent on the top of the tranny. Mine is only damp on the drivers side with some dust mixed in. I was at BIR and turns 1, 2, 3 are all right handers with 1,2 being very high speed.

Cosmoline application is very spotty. Some areas/components have very little and some have a lot.
Sincerely,
Macster.
