2000 owner's manual & battery ventilation fan
(No) Thanks to the original owner of the 2000 996 cab I just bought, there is no owner's manual with the car.
Is there a version available on-line? Is there a separate cabriolet supplement manual? I only found the manual for a later model 996, and Suncoast site doesn't even show MY 2000 as available anymore. As well, I can hear a very faint motor bearing sound on the driver side of the battery compartment with the car completely shut off, it sounds like a small muffin fan used for external hard drive cooling, could this be the battery ventilation fan, and one of the reason why the 996 needs to have a trickle charger connected for long(er) term storage to compensate for this current draw? TIA |
Try Sunset Porsche in Portland OR for the manual. There is no Battery fan on the 2000 C4 I own as far as I can tell. Maybe A/C system fan stays on after shut down - like the cooling fans for a short while ???.

It's not the AC fan, it is way too quiet, I only heard it when I happened to be leaning into the trunk area from the driver side near the battery while the car was in the garage and with the garage door closed late at night when I heard this in this very quiet environment, I doubt I would have heard it under any other circumstances.
I ask if this could be the battery ventilation fan since these batteries have vent tubes, it makes sense if there is a fan to draw away the gass coming out from the battery, wouldn't it? |
Send Suncoast an email, maybe they can order one for you. I have a 2000 Cab also and I got a manual from them about 6 months ago, but it took awhile. The manual doesn't mention anything about a battery fan.

Also you can download codes that the CEL throws and you can troubleshoot your car
saving $$ you would send to the dealer. http://www.renntech.org/forums/ |
Are Rennlist and Rentech related? Just became a paid up Rennlist member thinking it was Rentech..........
(palm-face emoticom) :) |
They are sorta considered "sister" boards.
Renntech is more tech oriented, the information is usually very accurate, and less chatty - not as much activity. For certain things like TSB, DIY, manuals, etc. etc. etc. it is extremely worthwile compared to rennlist. Whereas rennlist tends to be more of a "what color do you like", "let's show up somewhere for a drive", etc. etc. etc. board - although there can be some good technical info, it's not as easy to find nor always as "pertinent" as renntech tends to be. |
Renntech does not have a manual for your car, but it's still a very good investment.
