UPDATE - VIDEO ADDED: Squeaky Clutch.. not the pedal

Hi Guys,

On Sunday morning I took my '02 C4 Cab out for a drive. After about 15 mins I noticed that every time I depress the clutch, I hear a squeak. It is not coming from the pedal; rather from the underside of the car. It squeaks all the way through from about 1/3 of the way pressing the clutch, to all the way down fully depressed. Same happens when I let go.

At first I thought maybe some water got in the line and would soon dry up. It rained the night before. Over this week it has improved. It only happens once the car is warmed up and have been driving for several minutes. It does not happen when the car is cold. Any idea what it could be? The clutch otherwise is very strong.

I was basically depressing and releasing the clutch pedal, alternating quickly and slowly. I had just driven the car for about 25 minutes, so it was warmed up. The car is off. You can clearly hear that it is coming from under the car, not from the pedal.

Any other thoughts?

It sounds to me like the clutch line needs to be lubricated, if that makes sense at all.

I had the same problem only when trans hot. Clutch fork is worn on pin. Replace fork and pin. There is a upgrade that uses a plastic part that the fork rides on(seen in photo).

Is there a DIY on this? How much will parts cost? I just want to get rid of the squeak!!

My first reaction when I saw the title was the helper spring. Then you said it was under the car.

You might make double sure that's not it before you rip into the tranny. Sometimes the source of a noise can fool you in a running car.

Zookie 06-17-2011 10:58 PM

well i have been told its the Release Bearing that makes the squeeky noise under the car...

Parts are not that much, it's all labor to drop trans. If new clutch is needed then have it done then. I did it my self. Big job...

I'll make a quick clip with my iPhone tomorrow. Maybe that will help you help me :)

Mine sqeaks too. First try lubricating the pedal / checking the helper spring.

UPDATE - VIDEO ADDED.

Chris, can you confirm this is what you were talking about?

Zookie 06-20-2011 01:50 PM

that sounds like my bed...

I say have someone else press the pedal down and crawl under the car and try to pinpoint the location. Start by looking at the slave cylinder. Hopefully it is not inside the transmission housing where the clutch and pressure plate are located. It sounds like the pressure plate to me though...

I'd just like to update everyone.
I sent my car off to Rich at ROCS Auto in Belleville and he did a phenomenal job.
I am not sure exactly what the problem was, but it was fixed. If I recall correctly, the clutch release arm was bent and worn and was rubbing on the press plate. I have asked Rich to chime in and explain as well.

The following parts were replaced, (if this helps at all for anyone):

- Clutch Release Arm
- Sachs Clutch Kit
- Clutch Slave Cylinder
- Other Various Bolts etc.

Some other work was done as well, but I only listed the parts related to the clutch

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks.
