Default Replacing The Pulley System

Hi guys,

Where could i find replacement pulley systems for my 996? Feel like replacing all the pulleys and bearings etc ... they're giving funny sounds.

Take a before and after sound clip. That would be interesting in a full pulley/belt replacement!

The only pulley, I have heard which requires replacement, that makes noise is the idler/tensioner pulley or alternator. What kind of noise is your car making?

The pulleys shouldn't make any noise, unless the belt is rubbing against one side of one or more of the accessory drive pulleys and it would only do this if the belt were not tracking properly.

This might be due to a mis-aligned accessory drive but more likely it is due to an accessory drive that has excessiive bearing play at its shaft.

And most often if this is the case the water pump is the accessory drive.

Check the belt for any sharp edges. The belt edges (compare to a new belt) should be rather blunt.

If you find an edge that is sharp (or sharper than the other edge) that's sign the belt's rubbing.

Note the direction of belt rotation and the routing and remove the belt.

Then give each accessory drive pulley a check for any play. The play may not be much. But you have several various drives to check and you should spot the one with any play. The one with any play is the one that has to be suspected of causing the noise.

Also, check all the idler roller bearings and tensioner roller bearing for any play or roughness.

Every car is different in this area. For example my 02 Boxster with over 241K miles is on its original belt idler rollers and tensioner but a failing water pump developed a noise and a bit of play gave me the clue. The water pump was replaced.

My 03 Turbo developed a 'dry bearing' noise at around 35K miles and the uppermost idler roller bearing was found to be bad.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I don't think the pulleys are sold separately. They are not wear items. But give a look at Suncoast's web site to see if it lists these items separately.

The idler roller/tensioner roller bearings are avaiable separately. I do not have the numbers handy but Suncoast may have them listed on its web site.

Or you can take your car's VIN to your local Porsche parts department and have the parts department look up the part numbers for you, if they exist.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Try those. Some are superseded.

If you are inventive (or poor) you can replace the bearings in the rollers - both the 2 guide rollers and the tensioning roller have the same bearing. Cost was less the $20 each bearing....

Agreed, but every online store i go to, they only sell the whole roller with the bearings.

Learn something new every day. Thanks.

Added: Wait a minute. As best I can tell those part numbers are for the idler/tensioner rollers. These are for sale separately. I bought a full set for my Boxster shortly after I bought the car in 02. I still have all the new parts in the front trunk, unused. The original rollers have held up rather well, over these last 242K miles. (The 03 Turbo did need a new idler roller though at 35K miles.)

I do not find the accessory drive pulleys list separately though.

But Pelican Parts or Suncoast or even (God forbid though anyone here ever visited one....) the local dealer parts department should turn up a part number for these parts if they are available separately.

Though why the OP needs new ones is beyond me.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Just to confirm, how many tension rollers does a 2000 c4 tiptronic have?

What other things should I change/look at while changing my pulley system?
