Default Canyon/HPDE car. Should I stick with a 99 or deal with PSM/drive by wire

Hi All,

Currently shopping for a 996 c2 to replace my track prepped e36 m3. Primary use will be canyon runs and HPDE events. I found a decent deal on a choice color 2001 c2 but I keep debating if I will regret having a e-throttle car and no LSD.

Id like to hear the opinion of the enthusiasts! How is the e-throttle in these cars? I have owned many performance cars and always enjoy the most simple of cars, the e36 had no nannies or frills and it was a blast.

If you were in my shoes, is it worth it to hold out for a 99 lsd equipped car?

Just to throw this in the mix, although inching out of my price range to dump money into mods and maintenance:

1999 with throttle cable and lsd or a mkII with the 3.6 (and obviously no lsd and e-throttle)?

Thanks guys, looking forward to the responses.

I have an '02 ... Throttle is responsive and the only time Psm kicked in for me it probably saved me from a spin. Not intrusive on the track with these cars. It's not like an m3 where you might want to slide the rear on the throttle and hold a drift ..slow in fast out works best, with some trail braking - else you get lots of understeer - nailing the trottle just after mid corner ...

The '02 3.6l engine has more power and a few other useful upgrades over the mk1's

Buy Gator's car. It's a '99 and already set up for the track.

Yeah, I have read a few threads on how the 996 does really need and LSD. How is the throttle response with the drive by wire? I am a sucker for a throttle cable.

I just saw that car on eBay. It looks nice but is about 2000 miles away. Is he on the forum, I hate eBay?

I have a 99 C2 that I track regularly. I had previously been in a 14 Cayman S - so the changes were very noticeable, but throttle response didn't bother me at all. And no nannies was actually very liberating once I got used to it.... because even though you can switch off traction control in the Cayman, it will re-engage under certain circumstances (ugh!).

Solved the considerable issue of VERY high gearing with a 997 transmission with LSD (worth 3 seconds a lap... leaps off corners). And the 996 will do things that the Cayman just won't do without spending mucho bucks...

Well since KC already mentioned it...

Look at Gator's car. I imagine he'd be happy to chat with you and give you as much info about how it performs on the track as you want.

He's an upstanding member and it's already a built car. Crazy low price for what it is too.

Not to take away from Gator, but there is also another thread about a guy thinking about selling his that is on your side of the country. Recent motor rebuild and bored it out to a 3.6l buy a apparently very reputable and capable shop.

Gator's has all the track stuff done to it though so it sounds like the better car for your goals.

What year 997 trans are you running? I thought they had the same gearing.

Tuddy, I'm having trouble replying to your pm but I did receive it. No LSD on my car but it does have throttle cable. PM me back your email address and I will send some more pics this evening.

Throttle by cable or wire doesn't seem as important as an LSD for a track car. Personally, I would go for a 3.6 C2 if I was doing track days.

You could always swap in a LSD to a car that best suits your needs.

I agree, although there seems to be a big debate on the effectiveness of a 100k clutch type 80/20 diff.

Im not concerned about peeling 10ths off my lap times as much as I am concerned with driving feel and, dare i say, pleasure?

Haha, I understand that basically everything under the sun has drive by wire now but when looking for an older 911, I just want the most connected feel. My 03 z06 was drive by wire and felt phenomenal but my e46 m3 left a lot to be desired. Just wondering where this falls as i am highly considering pulling the trigger on an '01.
