Talking One Year with my 996! My Mods and Thanks.

It's been one year since I picked up my 996, and thanks to Rennlist (and Renntech), I've learned a lot!

Here's stuff I've managed to do this year:
  • Cassette holder delete (added storage tray)
  • Clay Bar and Detail
  • Clutch assist spring change (to a smaller spring)
  • Cab top hack (allows opening/closing while moving)
  • Remote lock/unlock antenna fix (trimmed to 130mm)
  • Cigarette Lighter replace (with a normal sized one)
  • Added a cig lighter flashight. (better than the cigarette icon)
  • Ultimate cupholder
  • New Carrera logo (old one was cracked)
  • Cassette adapter for Ipod (I know, I know, it's not the best, but it works)
  • Cassette adapter cord modification to hide it (flattened with an iron)
  • Replaced cassette player (got a new one for free, old one had peeling buttons)
  • Repaired sticky cassette *****.
  • Added additional cig lighter power outlets behind center console (connected to phone plug power source)
  • Hardwired garage door opener to "targa" garage door switch in dash
  • Convertible top window repair DIY
  • Hardtop Hoist in Garage DIY
  • Painted Wheel Caps DIY
  • Added wind deflector (from ebay)
  • Basic maintenance DIY (Oil, filters)
  • New Clutch Plate, AOS (not DIY)
  • Sumitomo HTR III Z tires
  • Spark plugs, spark plug tubes
  • Exhaust Mod - Swapped out my 3.4L mufflers for 3.6L mufflers with "PSE" partial bypass mod
  • Spoiler switch in dash
  • Speeding Ticket
  • Hardwired Radar Detector
  • In process: brake pads and rotors (DIY)
What a fun car to drive. Spring is finally arriving, and top-down season is here. It's amazing how much better the modded mufflers sound with the top down! (I think you coupe guys are missing out )
I celebrated the nice weather yesterday with a fresh coat of wax and a short drive.

Thanks to all you Rennlisters past and present for the wealth of knowledge on this board.

Quite a list, nice job. Your cab is beautiful, nice to have such an enthusiast on the forum....except for the speeding ticket of course.

Nice list. I guess I represent the lazy part of Delaware. I only have oil changes, spark plugs, clear side markers and chrome bulbs on my list of accomplishments.

Well done!

Allegedly, I was going 72 in 50. I was still accelerating when I saw the officer and his radar equipment fixed on me. It was stupid of me, really. I was passing a pickup truck, and shouldn’t have been in a hurry. I was given a ticket for (allegedly) going 59 in 50, so I got somewhat of a break.

BTW, I have since taken a $25 online defensive driving course, which gives a 3-point credit, and a discount on car insurance. Reduced my premium by $80/year.

The switch really isn't very useful, but I didn't like the look of the dash with a bunch of empty switch locations.

The Spoiler Switch, gloss finish is part number 996.613.155.00.A02, and it was $27.26 from Sunset Porsche in Oregon when I bought it last year. Make sure you get the correct gloss or matte finish to match your buttons. Eariler 996's have the gloss buttons.

I followed a DIY over at Renntech for the wiring:
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...il-switch-mod/
It takes a bit of wiring, but the DIY tutorial is thorough.

I'm not sure, but there may be different button part numbers for installation on the left side of the dash vs. the right side of the dash. Read the DIY and double check when you order the button.

The switch on top is actually made to be a targa shade control switch, but since it looks like a garage door, I bought one and followed this DIY to make it a garage door controller.
The Switch is called a Tip Switch, P/N 996-613-119-10-A05.
I think I got it from Suncoast in Florida, but Sunset probably has it too.

Note that the Targa switch is only available in matte finish, so I put 3 light coats of clear gloss spray paint finish to make it match my glossy buttons. The buttons are a little bit dirty/greasy in my photo above, but the gloss match is nearly perfect.
