Default Retrofitting PSE to 996

Buddy has a 2001 Porsche 996 w/3.4L and stock exhaust. He recently purchased a pair of factory OEM Porsche sport exhaust mufflers from a local guy who was converting his car to a track only car and took them off. We want to install these mufflers but need the additional parts. Can anyone please provide part#'s for what I will need to install them. Right now have the mufflers w/ brackets and the associated solenoid etc... I "believe" I will need wiring harness, vacuum hoses and cabin buttons.

Also, anyone have a "how-to" or a link with pictures of a retrofit installation?

Finally, if it turns out to be too much trouble to do the wiring and vacuum what happens if we install "just" the mufflers? Are they in the "ON" mode without electronics and vacuum or the "OFF" position? In other words can we just install mufflers and have them be LOUD all the time?

Most people just bolt them on and don't wire up the vacuum solenoids, switches etc. It will be in the open sport mode if it's installed as is. It's not obtrusively loud even coming home late at night in a quiet neighborhood. You can just hear the motor sing and it gets better as the "R"s climb.

I'm curious of the overall cost of retro-fitting a full PSE, including the solenoids and switches. If anyone has done this and has the costs, please share.

How can you tell if the "selonoid" is in the ON or OFF mode before you install them?

I would join renntech and become a contributing member.... lots of benifits there.... you can download tsb that will give you the instructions to install the system.... it really is a great sight and have tons of additional tech info aside from just becoming a regular member.

the exhaust is defaulted to the open position (sports mode). The installation of the electronics is worth while.... the install includes wiring a speed sensor that will automaitcally turn the exhaust on/off based on how fast you are going.... I opted to put a selection switch to this option.

the solenoid is Normal closed.... when energized, the solenoid will open to let vauum through and open the valve for sports mode.

The PSE I installed on my '99 996 was normally open in Sport Mode without the solenoids hooked to the vacuum hoses. When my new motor was installed, the tech asked me if I knew I had a Sport Exhaust, I said yes. He then told me it will now sound a lot better because he wired the flaps for Sport Mode.

I drove the car home and noticed it was quiet just like stock. I had to take off my bumper cover and remove the wire holding the flaps against the normal spring tension that keeps it in Sport Mode. So on mine just installing the mufflers will make it louder. The vacuum operates the solenoids to make it quiet. Later models could be the opposite.

If you're just going to leave it in sport mode, you should just do the fister hack, no?

I think I have most of the parts you will need in a box in my storage room. When I got my PSE I received duplicates on most of the parts. Let me check an I will post a list and picture of what I have.

Here is what I have:

Vacuum tank 993.110.140.03
Holder for vacuum tank 477.971.881.A
Hexagonal bolt, spacer sleeve, bracket for switchover valve
Switchover valve 996.605.127.01
Teflon house with stainless steel mesh 917.355.021.00
Check Valve 964.100.950.01
Y piece 928.573.727.03 (only 1)
Rubber sleeve 996.110.685.52
Protective sheath bent 928.574.717.03
3 m hose 900.918.048.40
hose clamps 999.512.069.02 (x4)

There is a relay for the system, a tip switch for the dash that would have to be purchased from a dealer. I can find the part numbers. The wiring harness can easily be made from a few pieces or wire. I love the ability to switch the system from loud to quiet. I did not do the speedometer wire as I did not want the automatic quiet mode.

Like someone mentioned about the price - my local dealer said it would be ~$6,000 installed when I asked about it.

I also suggest just skipping all the electronics and leaving the mufflers on Sport mode exclusively.

The sport mode is quiet enough if you don't really punch the throttle too much. Also when cruising on the highway they are relatively quiet as well. Then of course when you accelerate quickly you'll be able to hear the engine as it was intended to be heard.

There are lots of owners who don't install the electronics, but I can tell you I love having the ability to switch from sport mode to the quiet mode. If you don't want this then I would go with the Fister D mods and sell the PSE's. They tend to go for a lot of money these days as Porsche has raised the price to $6,000+. There is a set of just the mufflers on eBay for $900 starting with $100 shipping.

+1.... If you do a lot of street driving, the switch is very handy. starting the car on an early morning Sunday drive while everyone is asleep is one occasion that I use it all the time.... It sounds really good with sports cats.... And if you want to talk to someone...priceless.

$6k for a set of cans?!? Wow!

If anyone wants mine I'll let them go for half that cost!

I use my car to go to the gym at 5am. I just slip it into 2nd gear as soon as I can to keep the noise down. But I know when I first turn the key things are pretty loud. Oh well, no sneaking out of the house for me...
