Default 3rd brake light LED - do they really work?

I'd like to replace mine however I've read so many negative reports on these things I'm gun shy.

Any opinions and/or suggestions on where to buy good ones would be greatly appreciated.

I replaced both of my third brake lights with LED units and they work great. Plug and play, no issue at all.

I bought the smoked 3rd brake light, more for the smoked look than the led. Works great, and I think it's much brighter than the stock ones. I think I broke the stupid plastic mechanism that locks it in place, but apart from that install was easy. Bought mine on ebay.

I bought mine on ebay also, from a merchant named sportscarextras. I bought the smoked variety also, one for each light. They actually came as a pack of two.

I also broke one of the locking pieces during my installation, so I sent them a note and they sent me another one at no charge.

Nice! Just wondering why you didn't go with the clear one? Apparently the clear one looks great on a silver car.

Thanks again for your reply.

Really? Never thought about the clear one, as I'm going for a kind of "dark" look with my car. I'm toying with the idea of blacking out the rear strip & tail-lights.

There's no reason why the LED lights shouldn't last years and years and years. I have had mine on for a few years.

The only advice I'd give from experience is that if you (like me) have also got the LED rear lights then you will need a ballast resistor in line with the LED 3rd brake light. This is because the LEDs draw a minimum amount of current compared with bulbs. Therefore it looked open circuit to the electric system and my cruise control didn't work (996 manual) until a load resistor was put in the circuit. Then everything worked perfectly well. Had them on a couple of years
.

Please expand your reply. Is this about the aesthetics or durability?

mine (from ebay).... and a few others have chimed in with similar experience, a year later during a fun run someone told me that my third light wasnt working.... went home, played around with it, got it to work..... then stopped again, The prongs on the reps are thinner so I bent them to make a more solid contact..... it did the trick, but only to find out weeks later it stopped working again. Im sure the light still works if I play with it more.... but Im done playing around with it. When I put my OEMs back on..... it actually looked pretty good in red and it works. If you compare these and the OEMs..... the OEM beats the rep hands down quality wise.

X-UFO, can you elaborate what resistance you needed as I had same problem when I tried to install rear tail light led, my third brake light LED, was acting up, like staying on for no reason and stuff like that.
