Default Tire noise, specific question

I've read the posts on tire noise and I believe my noise is tires. I'm the guy who just bought the 996 without the PPI.

I have a loud whoooooooo noise coming from the rear. I'm afraid it's a bearing but I'm sure it's tire noise.

Here are the specifics of my noise.

-it doesn't happen under 30 mph
-it mostly goes away after 80 mph
-it never varies in sound, meaning it doesn't change pitch when I go faster or slower.
-the rear tires are worn and need replacing.

What are your thoughts?

Bearing or tire noise?

It's pretty loud.

What's the tires and the tread depth. Jack the car up and wiggle the wheels if the move you have bigger problems. If they don't move I'd bet it's the tire noise. I had Yokohamas on my car, absolute silence until the tread got 1/3 the way down then the noise started. I had to get rid of them with at least half tread left.

These tires are very worn. They're ready to be changes. Only about a quarter inch of tread left.

I had the same issue on my Benz... thought a wheel bearing was bad.. turned out to be tires.
have you felt the wheel to see if its hot or warm after a long drive, they should be even temps... if one is hotter you prob have a bearing going bad. I don't believe it is all that big of a job to change them, but I'm not certain. :-)

Hello...,

I have had the same problem..it turn out to be the right rear wheel bearing.
The sound appear at around 25mph and seams to disappear at 60mph...but believe me the sound is still there and you will realize that after the repair.
An easy fix..
Good luck

I went through three sets of new tires before I came to realize that after about 8,000 miles they ALL became NOISY...

A spray can of undecoat in each rear wheelwell helped but not much. Inflating the rears only to ~38PSI was also of help.

But I still wouldn't rule out a mechanical problem were I you.
