Question Rear main seal

I am thinking of purchasing an 02 cab with 37k miles that hasn't had the main seal replaced. Is that a concern? What is the warranty on the seal? Is it covered until 100k miles or 10 years?

Unless the car is a CPO or you buy a specific warranty there is no coverage.

It's not a big deal, especially if it isn't leaking. Just replace it the next time you have the clutch replaced.

Is the RMS leaking now, or weeping? If not as others have noted, attend to it when you need to replace your clutch.

+1 on everything said. Change it when you need to or do it when the clutch needs to be replaced.
I'm at 56k and still on the original clutch and RMS.

I bought my car at 48K miles with original (not leaking) RMS. I'm getting my clutch done pretty soon, so I'll replace it then. But like the others said, if its not leaking then you have nothin to worry about.

I was happy to see an original, non-leaking RMS and IMS on my car when I bought it

54,000 miles on original RMS. When does one know when they need a clutch? and what is the typical costs associated with replacing a clutch?

Yep for sure replacing the IMS bearing with LN Engg's kit, along with clutch, flywheel (if needed), and slave cyl and AOS and maybe starter since I'll already be up in there. My transmission's 2nd gear syncros are shot and there's a slight whine under certain conditions, so I'm going to get that rebuilt by Gbox or someone. I'll be doing it all myself, but not until I get my garage built and a lift installed. Sure, I can do it all on jackstands and jacks like some of the rockin dudes on this site, but since I'm going to soon have my near-dream garage soon, I figure I'll save myself the grief.
I actually close on my house TODAY (within the next couple of hours) but there's no garage on the property so I'm building a small shop next to the house. Hopefully in about 3-4 months I'll have it all finished and can put down some cool DIYs for the site.

You can usually tell if you need a clutch, the engage point is high and you might notice the clutch slipping. If you just do clutch and not flywheel, I've been quoted at indy shops around $1500-1800, with flywheel $2000-2500. I'm doing the flywheel with the clutch, also the RMS, but I'm going to wait until my clutch starts slipping, I'm trying to get as much use out of this one as I can, lol.

Congrats on your house closing. Nice to hear somebody is active in the real estate market. I'm a builder, and things are slow up here.

I am very surprised at how early people replace clutches on these cars. I have driven manual transmission cars for longer than I care to remember, and have generally gotten 85K - 100K on a clutch. I see people replacing clutches on Porsches at 35K - 50K. Are these people inexperienced in clutch operation so that they ride the clutch when starting out, or using the clutch to hold the car on a hill, or what. . . . ? Or, is it typical to replace a clutch on a 996 at 50K miles?

Just curious, to plan for the future. My 996 has 30K miles, and the clutch is sooooolid.
