Default 2002 996 C4S air filter housing sponge?

I changed out my air filter today and noticed that there is a soft spongy material in the bottom of the housing. It has completely disintegrated and falls apart in my hands.
What function does this material serve? Does it need to be replaced? What is part number if so?

In trying to find the part number for this material, I was unable to use the link I had available for the 996 PET. Is there an updated link available?

Thanks.

I cleaned that piece out completely as it was disintegrated. It has been a long time back and I do not notice any side effects.

I did ask about the purpose of that foam piece at the time but did not get any specific/definite answer. Seems like it could be for sound dampening?

Thanks. That sounds like a reasonable purpose. I have removed it and the retaining plastic screen to ensure no debris will clog the new air filter.
