Default a little help please...

'01 C4 tip

started her up last night going home and was a fairly rough start. turned off, started again. same thing, engine light starts to flash, battery meter moving. put in drive and it settled down. while driving felt normal, engine light stopped flashing, just stayed on. when stopped it idled hard (felt vibration in the car, not violent but still felt it). had to get home, didnt have much choice in the matter. taking it to my guys tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

flashing CEL?

rough idle could be a simple cracked coil pack getting wet - common this time of year, but you do have a choice and a flashing CEL means dont drive it and if you end up causing $20k worth of damage, the $200 tow bill to the shop will seem pretty insignificant dont you think?

anyhow good luck on repairs, hope its something simple

edit, I forgot flashing is OK to drive, normally this is indicator of misfire - still my original post of crack coil pack is high suspect

Have your guys read the CEL with a code reader and it will give them a code that should help pinpoint your problem. I believe a flashing CEL indicates that you shouldn't drive your new Porsche, a steady CEL is of to drive. GL tomorrow. I agree w/Ed that it sounds like a bad coil pack.

I'm thinking cracked coil or a bad MAF (mass airflow sensor).

When the CEL is flashing your engine can be pouring gas into the cats from misfires and it's said the deposit's from hydrocarbons can kill the coatings inside. All I know is the manual is really clear on this - STOP and then turn off car. The guys are correct about the coils - I had an O ring go bad and water was getting by the tube and I had the same symptoms.

It's caused by winter. Get away from the cold weather as fast as you can.

I wonder if super cold water hitting the coil packs makes them crack.
