Default Cabin air filter location

I did a quick search with cabin air filter in the subject line for the 996 forum, but I could not find anything.

Does anyone know if it is easy to replace the cabin air filter on the 996?...or is it hidden deep inside the dashboard?

I saw some replacements on eBay ranging from $23 to $30.

Is there a DIY article on the site for this?

Thanks.

I would but it did not come with the car.

Its easy. Just remove the large plastic cover where your battery is located. It is on the passengers side. You just pull it out and put a new one it. So easy a cave man can do it...

Yep big phillips screw driver to undo the plastic lid in that area and the filter is tucked up under there close to the top of the car. I think I remember some sort of snap in arrangement.

I think it's a Torx head not Phillips.

Check the prices here for the filter from Pelican, in the case of this part they almost always beat the prices you find on eBay.

Note there are two types, regular and charcoal activated. They are interchangeable.

Just to confirm - they list the charcol filters, but it seems to say for cars with the M571 option. Does it matter - will the charcol one still fit and work? I figure that charcol activated must do a better job at capturing crap - similar to a Brita water filter

To the best of my knowledge the filters are all the same size.

The charcoal filter probably assists with removing "organic" smells. Nothing more - no better filtration I'd suspect. I doubt it does much good with the fan on High setting - in other words, the smells enter the cabin because there is not enough residence time in the charcoal "bed".
