Looking at either a 996 or 986. Many don't yet have the IMS bearing replaced. As a DIYer with a garage (and a lift in the plans), is there a difference in level-of-difficulty in replacing the IMS bearing on a Boxster vs a 911? (And while I'm asking... which car is 'better' as a DIYer in general?). Thanks.

The Bentley Publishers video also has a great overview of the process:

We have free tool rental including RMS tool when you order an IMS Solution. Discounted tool rental is also now offered through LN when purchasing a Retrofit kit.

What is the consensus on how many miles per year will circulate the oil sufficiently for it not to ‘spoil’?
I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a car that just had the bearing replaced. Because I’m splitting my time between North and South, I won’t be putting tons of miles on any one car.
Thanks.

It's not a consensus, it's LN Engineering gospel:
Service interval recommendations are valid only with use of Joe Gibbs BR break in oil during the new IMS bearing break-in period of 200-400 miles along with use of an LN Engineering Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter with subsequent oil changes at 6 months or 5,000 miles using Joe Gibbs DT40. Severe service interval is 3 months or 3,000 miles.

Adam—That’s really not what I was asking. The bearing tends to fail with greater frequency on cars that don’t get driven very often. I was wondering what constituted low useage that would give the oil trapped in the bearing a chance to corrode the material and cause failure.
IOW, if I drive 5000 mi a year, am I at significantly greater risk of a failure than if I drive 15,000 mi per year?

It's the very short drives once a week where the oil doesn't have a chance to burn off the moisture, or the garage queen that's started once a week, idled for 10 minutes then shut down, it's those cars that are at high risk.
I never take my cars out if they aren't going to be driven for a while. (That's what my daily driver is for.) I also have a new Shelby GT350 and some of those are having mysterious engine failures, so I treat that the same way.

IMS bearing kit For Sale
I have a 2003 Targa with 74,000 miles, decided to drop engine and do bearing and seal swap before any issues.
Pulled it apart and found out that bearing was different.
Upon Inspection found out I had a new engine fitted in 2010 under warrantee at 49,000 miles by Porsche. Its the newer engine so IMS is not an issue.
I had talked to the dealer before and asked why they did not tell me, there explanation was they only keep records for 2 yrs, go figure?.
NEW KIT FOR SALE
So I have a LN kit and a new oem seal , I paid $547 for all as I had a coupon, the LN kits are now $650 plus seal $48 ( $698) value
I will seal all for $490 to member. I have photos and receipt, brand new, along with registration card for kit, I can send photos.

I had an identical Capri when I was in HS. The thing must have been built in the old Tiger factory in Germany. The sheet metal had to be an inch thick—it accelerated like it was. Fond memories though.

Just to be clear, can you add the Solution without replacing the IMS? My car had the bearing replaced early this year and the previous owner put about 1,000 mi on it in the past year.

Got it. I thought you could add the pressurized feed to an existing IMSB.

The solution IS the replacement for the bearing. Read up on it at LN engineering and/or Jake Raby site.
