996 40th Anniversary FAQ

I. COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

A. The Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) was standard.
-NO. Actually, the PSE was only a dealer installed option, not a factory option or standard.

B. 10mm ride height drop was standard.
-NO. The US 996 40th AE has the US M030 suspension which has NO drop. The ROW 996 40th AE had the ROW M030 which is 10mm lower than ROW stock.
http://web.archive.org/web/200307071...article_3.html

C. Behind the turbo front bumper is a 3rd radiator.
-NO. Like the C4S there is no 3rd radiator. However, we do have the larger turbo radiators as well as the turbo bumper which both provide increased cooling compared to the stock radiators.

D. I'd like to get more cooling so I'll just add the suncoast 996 C2/C4 center third radiator kit.
-NO. The suncoast C2/C4 center third radiator kit does NOT fit.

One can consider the 996 turbo center radiator kit instead

III. IMS FAILURE

Many have noted it is impossible to determine a rate of IMS failure. However, with both the millenium and anniversary editions, there is a known denominator / quantity. Thus, I compiled from rennlist KNOWN IMS failures in 996 40ths and 996 Millenniums which assumes that the ACTUAL IMS failure rate is higher. This also doesn't take into account oil change frequency, maintenance care, high RPMs, etc.

Interestingly, while I assumed 996 40th probably has the lowest IMS failure rate given its late 996 production cycle, Jake Raby suggests that the single bearing design of the mk2 may be inferior to the dual bearing IMS on the early mk1. Who knows?

40th Anniversary 996 IMS FAILURE (9/1963 -> 0.46%)

Great car - I have # 1083 purchased last June. 12,000 miles on it - everything mint - looks brand new. In fact, one of my friends who does not know about Porsches asked "Is it a 2009?".

I wonder who has #1 (Porsche museum?)

Other good serial numbers to have would be 996 and 911.

Just completed two years of ownership last week with my 996 AE (#0025). Mostly no problems ... just the clutch which I expect and now to fix a suspension rattle I am replacing the drop links. It is still a thrill every time I drive the car!

Some might argue this thread is useless w/o pics. So here is a pic from earlier this summer. In 3 months, I've put 5k miles. Yikes!

Here is my pic. I was planning on going out and detailing the exterior with some Zaino today.

I purchase the car April 2009. It had 43k miles. 17 months later I have 53k miles. It gets used as much as possible.

I have number...well it's in the garage in NC so I don't know. I'm in Panama right now so I can't remember. I think I am at 48k miles or something.

I also just had the ceramic IMS bearing installed (thanks marky522!)

Thinking about getting some 19" wheels. Has anyone tried those new OZ Ultra lightweight wheels that come in all of the colors? I like the dark grey from above but they look like Volks. I have also thought about SSR GT3s but the factory wheels are great. I just need a set of competition wheels.
