I've been thinking of doing the "Orange Cap" mod to my 996 AE but have run into an issue. The AE has an extra "breather" hose that runs into the stock plastic intake elbow. What is everyones solution for this? I hate the idea of just capping it or sticking a small filter on it. Is there any silicone elbow that incorporates the hose? I think only X51 and Automatics have the hose. Pic is attached of a stock AE intake and the "Orange Cap" Intake.
The thing you're bypassing is part of the tuning of the airbox as a helmholtz resonator. Yes, if you delete it, you will hear slightly more intake whooshy sounds. However, the resonator is engineered like an instrument- its length is tuned to not only reduce the noise but to improve airflow characteristics.
Also, it's tacky. There's no "respect other people's taste" or "sweet build bro" in this situation...there's no excuse for putting a damned tropicana or gillette cap in the engine bay of a near-$100k MSRP car.
Haha.. the pic was for example. I wasn't actually thinking of using a tropicana cap. But I see your point somewhat. I do think it's a better option for sound than replacing the entire intake system with an open oiled filter. I'd like to retain the stock box while adding more intake sound. Allready have exhaust.
I figured out the other inlet tube is only on X51 and certain automatic cars. It feeds the transmission filtered air.
Excited to be coming back into the fold of the 40AE team, let me explain.
I owned #454 from 2012 to 2015 and kept active on this board. As many of you may recognize, I suffer from auto addiction and after 3 years of ownership started getting itchy feet to try something else. A house move was the perfect excuse to explain to my wife why I was selling the car I had wanted to much and spent so much $ and time on. Not much interest in the 40th, so ended up selling it to a dealer for $29k (all original 48k miles, std IMS, no luggage). A few months later before we hadn't even moved house and a E39 M5 replaced it. Nice car, but drove like a truck compared to the 40th, lots of power, very little traction. I actually liked it and would have another (I sold it after 9 months). But it was no sports car like the 911 and i missed the way the 911 drove.
Got a D3 S8 as a DD to try and plug the gap but still hankered for a 911. Last few months started thinking "I'll get a cheap 996 for the summer, something to work on", I am sure some will debate this but honestly there are not that many "cheap' 996's anymore when your looking for a Manual coupe with a black interior. Pricing in the last few years have definitely moved. So then I started increasing the max price on Autotrader searches and before you know it I was looking at C4S's and some 40AE's. I love the look of the C4S but couldn't get over how well a 40AE drives, with the RWD, weight, suspension & power kit.
So long story slightly shorter for the first time in my 44 car ownership life I have purchased the same model. #478 who's owner is on the board. Paid more than I hoped/expected but it is a great well cared for car, 40 AE's are special and sometimes you dont realize it until they are gone. Pricing would also suggest people are beginning to catch on
Picking it up next week and I cant wait. My first 40 was purchased in FL and i drove it back to MN, this one is coming from CA and I look forward to the 2,000+ mile drive home. I'll post a little about the trip next week.

I am on my 2nd 40th too as I regretted selling my first one. I had a 996tt in between and missed the lighter and more direct feeling C2. Also thought about getting a 20k one and ended up back in a 40th.
I also had an E39 M5 for a short while and I miss that car greatly too. For the street a little give in grip can be more entertaining for me. Felt like I was driving an Australian Super V8 series race car. :-)
Sadly, I think I am selling my 40th once again due to lack of time to drive it and a very short commute. I'm truly torn about it. I will most likely be replacing it with a Chevrolet SS with a 6speed - which many say is truly a proper modern day E39 M5 but only better.
Will see if I can really do it. It's easy to sell a car that you haven't driven since October (Chicago winter hibernation), but then once you drive you cannot bare to do it.

Yes planning a few mods, it’s still pretty cold here in MN, so plan to do a few straight away. Purchased a 997 shifter, really want to get a set of Braid Fuchs wheels and will do the fister style muffler to mod at a local shop.
Then over time maybe an IDP plenum and a fresh air intake, suspension rebuild next winter either ROW MO30 or Ohlins, probably rebuild the calipers again but no colors as it doesn’t suit Fuchs wheels. And sooner or later something with the head unit as I seem to remember the audio isn’t great.
However all of the mods need to be reversible, want to be able to turn the car back to standard.
