Default 996 Interior Console - Everything you should know

I have removed just about every single piece of my interior, so I'm going to make this thread a reference for others. Feel free to contribute / correct any mistakes or refine anything I've done. I'll add anything to the first post that is helpful to others. I just don't want people having to go through the same issues I did. I'm going to take pictures and make everything very detailed.

Car: 2003 996 Porsche Turbo
Transmission: 6-speed

Removing the center console
Tools Needed
Will update w/pics

Screws and locations
Will update w/pics

Time involved
  • First Time: approx. 15 mins
  • Second Time: approx. 5 mins.

Painting the center console (example in silver)
Tools Needed
$7.82
  • (Home Depot) Model # 182430 Internet/Catalog # 202016516 1 Can - Rust-Oleum 11 Oz. Titanium Silver Metallic Universal Spray Paint

$10.00
  • 60 Grit Flexible Sanding Sponge (gets the rubberish coating off)
  • 150 Grit Sandpaper (use this to smooth the body filler)
  • 300 Grit Sandpaper (use this to sand out any scratches caused by 150 Grit)

$54.53
  • 1 Gallon - Fibreglass Evercoat 120 Rage Xtreme High Performance Premium Lightweight Body Filler

While you have the console off
So, what else can be done while we have the console off?

Shift Linkage Upgrade / Replacement
The stock shifter linkage piece snapped off the ball of the shifter and left me stranded twice. The cheap plastic piece that comes from the factory is terrible.
  • Part: SSLA - Boxster & 996 Shifter Linkage Upgrade By Schnell
  • Price: $57.50

What's involved:
  • Remove the center console
  • Remove factory black linkage (pics later)
  • Replace with upgraded Linkage (pics later)

GT3 console delete kit

What's involved:
  • Remove factory aluminum bracket (4 bolts)
  • Replace with GT3 console (pics later)

More to come later...

Pics/Info on Door Speaker Surround Removal would be great!

BTW- I recently took off my center console surround, key surround, and CD holder and had it painted at my local body shop to match the silver/aluminum trim. It came out just about perfect, and took me more time to drop off the parts than take them out.

Poor Man's customer interior for sure!

Wow, I was ready to call the coroner.

And you just let a newbie slide with zero pics, with same noob actually asking for pics. I'll just call the paramedics.

I'll let it slide this time, even though I still don't see a single pic from the OP. And a silver car. Oh, the pain.

Seems the OP hasn't been around for almost 3 months.

I'm just finishing up a DIY painting my bumperettes and center console Midnight Blue Metallic so I'll throw up a few pics once I've got them done. Which, if all goes well tonight, will be by Friday
