Anyone else get rid of their 996 engine undertray

Given my experience with Pcar dealerships and their "trained technicians." I prefer to give my business to someone who spent years as a mechanic on a porsche racing team.

The tray you shown in the picture is the transmission undertray, which should be left on the car. There are no engine undertray in the 996, or 997. Except the techquipment engine protection metal plate that you install under the sump pan. Which makes a bigger mess when you change oil then it's worth.

Since your mechanic is recommending removing part of the aerodynamic undertray, he must have access to a wind tunnel facility just like the guys in Weissach do to make such an informed recommendation.

I think you should reread the post. Given that our cars will not be traveling at triple digit speeds for 90% of its life. Is the mentioned tray necessary?

a stock 996 wing deploys at ~70 mph.... is it necessary?
how about those wings on the rear bumper -
the front splitter -
skirts -
those are not just for looks......... are they

That is my point. The wings and front splitter, explained to us by Porsche, has XXX of lbs downforce at speeds 150mph+. It never says how many lbs of downforce is at 70mph or less.

There are many posts about 996 with inadequate cooling with people who track their cars and install the third radiator. Clearly, Porsche and other automakers will sell cars that have design deficiencies which are then corrected in later generations.

FWIW, in order for Ferrari to achieve the needed downforce without external wing or aerodynamic devices they had to seals the bottom of the car completely using panels. Which is a major contribution of excessive engine heat build up. I mean there are so much heat generated in a 360's engine bay that the engine lid will burn your hand. A spirited run generally will bring my engine oil temperature up to 230 degree F, for someone who tracks their 360 the temp goes up to 250F !!!!
Porsche don't have that problem because they have an external wing, and I prefer without the engine tray. If you ever tried to take off the engien undertray of a Ferrari you will know. It is so poorly designed it take about 30 minutes just to remove the tray, and it is not a one shot lift the car up remove the tray deal. You will have to lift the car up remove some of the bolts, and rest the car down on it's wheel on a stand and then swing the lift arm back in and remove more bolts, and then the tray can come off. And then you will have to lift the car back up to work on it. The Italians obviously didn't put any thought about the guy who is going to work on it.

I said ~70 mph because the real number is a bit hard to pin down due to the fact that almost all of these have speedos that read incorrectly - the number on the car says 74-75 for deployment, but the actual speed is most likely closer to 69-70 IMO

My car did not come with an engine undertray - where can I get one???
BTW: the 993 engine undertray was mainly for European noise compliance, not aero-mumbo-jumbo/hocu-pocus. My guess is that the 996 will sort of be the same. In other words, the 996 is not going to fly off the road inexplicably because the oil-catcher was left off. If it was such a big deal - pre-DE tech inspection would mandate that it be put back on. There.
