Question Oil Temperature

Been curious for a while.

I understand in the 996 Mark 1 cars you can read oil temp in some manner.
Also in the 997 oil temp can be read.

Is there a way of seeing the oil temp in the Mark 2 996? and if not is there a after market gauge of some sort?

Cheers,

Geoff

Hey Geoff!

If I remember right, you have to fiddle with the heater controls..like pushing a couple of buttons at the same time for a few seconds.

Have you searched??

The MK1 cars had an HVAC hack that displayed OBD data values. Don't believe that Oil was one of them unfortunately.

There are diagnostics in the MK1 cars climate control.

See post #6.

Default Given the oil is cooled (or heated when engine cold) by coolant....

knowing the coolant temperature tells you about all you need to know about oil temperature. That is coolant temp and oil temp are nearly the same. Close enough that going to the trouble to install an oil temperature (and while you're at an oil pressure) gage is not worth it unless you just what to "gage" up the car.

Which if done right can be kind of cool.

Sincerely,

Macster.

In the 997 the voltage gauge is replaced by the oil temp gauge.
In my 996 the oil seems to take longer to warm up, as indicated by a drop in the idle oil pressure. If the oil pressure is a guide, then suspect oil temp is not as "fixed" as the coolant, and effected by ambient temp etc
