Congratulations to all of you who actually DRIVE their 911s in the snow! I used to but with global warming it's a trek to find any!

Rudy, thanks for the pic.

You need to do an "amberectomy" to your headlights. They would look so much better if you did.

+1 this is a great mod, costs nothing but some time and looks WAY BETTER when done!

(well I did buy new bulbs for something like $15-20 silvers from xenonmods.com)

Ed,

"de-amberectomy?"

Is that like "de-un-install?"

Tim,

Oooh... Great idea! I really like that - didn't know that could look so good! (Ed - thanks for the pics - the eye test [which looks better? A? or B?]) was really helpful)

Now... how do I do that? (The side markers were a piece of cake....) What's that part called? And where's the best source?

Thanks again!

Rudy,

No parts needed to remove the amber plastic! Just a little of your time. Now how cool is that? You may want to replace the amber bulbs with the silver coated bulbs.

This link has everything you need to know. You can click on the pics to enlarge them. Make sure you clink on the link within this link to read his instructions, because there are some good tips in there.

I bought mine for $30 for the pair from Porsche of the Main Line. Took me all of 5 minutes to make the switch. Hell, if I can do it, anyone can.

Uhmmm.... Phil, you are confusing the "amberectomy" with the "pumpkin harvest."

Some pre-face lift cars have an amber lens in the lower headlight assembly turn signal. This lens can be removed with a soldering iron after the headlight assembly has been removed from the car. Check out ivangene's pics #2 (before) & #3 (after).

I think in the future, you need to concentrate on resolving only the issues involving the color "green!"

<Tim thinks to himself> Wait until Wayne reads Phil's post! <hee hee>

OK, I'm an idiot. Pumpin harvest = DIM (did it myself). Amberectomy = NFW. Don't need that one! Is there any way to block my post from Wayne's computer??

during the "operation" cover the hole with 3 layers of tin foil to avoid burning the edges. Use the soldering iron like a hot knife to CUT the lens. Start by making several holes (holes are easier to make than slicing) about 1/2 way up the lens, all the way around (its 3 sided) then slot the corners from the middle to the fathest away point. The lens should start to get loose and flop around. Take the needle nose pliers and pull off as much of the lower section (below your burned holes) as you can, the remaining 3 sided 1/2 will come out in one piece.

I have done this to 4 headlights now. The first took well over an hour because I spent 1/2 hour not understanding that the iron was supposed to cut the lens up and melt it into pieces. The other ones I did only took about 1/2 hour each (I have a wiener soldering iron, but too much heat seems worse than not enough as you can damage your light with too much heat)

I have to tell you, I love it and it really bothers me to see those amber lens in MKI lights since they can be removed and look so much better. There is NO OTHER AMBER on the car, why have it there????

GL with it, its a fun cold weather job and you wont even get dirty!! PLUS its basicly free!! (except new bulbs to make them really hot looking)

Tim,

Too cool! But strangely, I'm much more comfortable paying (or paying, plugging and playing) for things for the car then actually doing something myself (the downside of DIY is that there's no one to blame if it goes wrong other than the "y"...) But I might give this one a try...

The only thing missing from the link are the instructions for removing the headlight assembly from the car... Where is that to be found (on the truck I'd be unscrewing things until the part I wanted fell off... not on this car though)?

Thanks for the help!

About the NFW. I had originally typed something like "Phil, I hate to say this (not really) but you can not handle this mod." However, I decided that level of harshness should be reserved only for the Newbies, so I deleted it.

Only if you can intercept the 3 emails and 2 PM's I sent him!

Rudy,

Check your manual (OK this is a good excuse to use this emoticon ==> ) for instructions on how to remove the headlights. You should have an "L" shaped tool in your tool pouch which is located trunk (probably inside the spare tire rim). The is the tool to unlock the headlights.
