Default New Engine For 996

I was just reading my Excellence magazine and it says that Porsche has developed a new replacement engine for the Boxter and 996.
Am I reading this right? It was in the tech section. Is this a take-off on the new engine design they are coming out for the new model with this year?

does not have the IMS and uses a variable output oil pump. It also comes with direct fuel injection and I'm sure some other bells/whistles.

New transmission choice is PDK (something German for dual clutch auto-manual shift).

At some point in the future (a year maybe or perhaps less) this new engine will be moved into the Cayman and Boxster model lines.

Have not heard of any plans to offer this engine as a replacement for older Carreras and Caymans and Boxsters.

Sort of would be nice, but no way Porsche wants to help extend the life of old cars. It survives by selling new cars.

Sincerely,

Macster.

saw the first 09' S in my area last weekend, the shop guys were all over it. they said the PDK is really hot and that when driving on a "good road" that they could not have driven a 6 speed any faster. The shifting sounds quick and spot on.
The new design has a few minor changes that I liked and the new motor boasts more HP... that can't be bad unless you dont like HP...
I think some Tips owners will be trading up so watch for those values to drop. IMO... if you have been wanting one, give it about 6 months and I bet there will be plenty to pick from.
Overall the base price did not change much, i dont know about options (like PDK) but if you have to ask.....

(BTW.... I have to ask)

In the same issue, some of the engine changes are discussed in the C4 review.

I highly doubt that Porsche would make the new engines available for retrofit into the older cars. Would be great but doubt it. Of course it doesn't mean that folks won't try it on their own

If Porsche can make their margin goals selling this engine, at around 15% - 20% plus dealer labor revenue, what's the obstacle?

Insite (and others).
Sorry I was so slow to respond. Actually, the problem is I can't read. On page 46, it says "Even better news for new car buyers". I missed the "new car buyers" part.
False alarm, sorry.

selling a new car.

I do not expect these new engines to be made available for previous MY Porsches. In fact, I would expect over time for Porsche to raise the cost of replacing older MY engines in order to make the cost of keeping an older car on the road prohibitive and make a new car attractive to all but the very few who can afford to search out NOS and pay the high prices or afford to have an old engine rebuilt. Course even rebuilding kits would go up and availability go down.

Porsche like all car makers exists to sell new cars.

Besides, who's to say this new engine is perfect...

Sincerely,

Macster.
