Excellence Magazine 996 Market Update
The Sept. 2008 edition of Excellence (out now) contains the Porsche market update for 996 and Boxsters. It also contains (IMHO) a sane summary of the issues early 996s and Boxsters experienced.
"We feel used 986s and 996s offer superior dynamics, real comfort, modern safety, everyday usability, and real value. Buy smart and you'll have a ball."

Excellence is a good read, and helped me decide to purchase a MY99 996 almost 2 years ago. I really enjoy my Porsche and will no doubt own another 996 when the right one comes along(GT3 or turbo).

I thought this month's issue is a real good one with articles on the first Convertible D, an early 911 fuel injection conversion, and one by a Canadian guy who got on the slippery slope with a paint job on his old 911.

Actually I'm amazed at how Excellence is consistently, er, excellent!
Man, I've really got a hankerin' for an early 911... should've gotten one of those years ago.

It's funny that you mention that, a good friend of mine has an '84 911 Targa(Turbo look) and I have a 2000 Carrera. I have a complete blast every time I drive his Targa.
I love my 996, but his Targa is so raw and mechanical feeling in every way that I feel as though I am driving a pure race car when compared to my 996. If I had more garage space I would seriously consider adding a mid-80s 911 to my collection.

I'd love to have an early 70's 911S. When I was in my late teens, I had a 67 912, and holy crap that car was so much fun to drive - fairly slow, but I felt directly connected to the road and it was just a total blast to drive. An early 911S would be AWESOME - I don't care if they aren't super fast or anything, they'd be fast enough to have a great time.

El Torrente, that's interesting you would mention the early 911S. I have my friends 75 911S sitting outside my office. We just finished rebuilding it for him and will deliver it to him tonight. I agree the feel is incredible. and RAW. The sound and the smell. Yet I myself am considering whether I would go for a 996 instead of an older 911
