Default Water Pump Noise?

My car (2000 C4) has been making a constant noise in the past few days. Sounds like a bad water pump noise (bearing noise - ice cubes on slow in blender sound). Called dealer and they said that would be very rare for that car, 994 yes, 996 no. Service scheduled for next Wednesday.

What else could that noise be?

The sound you described could be the water pump or one of the idler pulleys is crapping out. I replaced all the idlers and the water pump on my 2000 when I owned it.

Very rare my butt. Changed out the water pump on my 99 996 this winter and the impeller was about half there. The imbalance of the impeller screws the bearing (this the noise) and you'll start to see a small leak of coolant, that gradually gets worse until complete failure. Ask me how I know....

I've since spoken with a number of 996ers that have replaced their pumps. I replaced mine with one that has the metal impeller and its working perfectly. I also replaced the idler pulley prior to the pump melt down thinking that was the problem.

Not a big deal, but I am surprised by your dealers response.

Not rare, my 99 996 water pump went out at 65k same noise you described, and have heard many others who have had the water pump fail in their 996 about the same miles or less. I was able to verify by removing the belt and turned and shook each of the pulley by hand and indeed was the water pump.

There were play (side to side) movement on the water pump pulley.

At 87k miles and running.......I'm keeping a watchful eye on my water pump.
I thought it should be about that time, could be anytime now.
