Default How to judge if suspension is worn out?

My car now has 75k miles on it and I imagine the suspension is singing it's last song but how do I determine that is true?

Ok, the front shocks huff and puff when I drive over a speed bump
and I think the shocks aren't dampening as they used to.
But how do you really know?

I have a stock suspension that I will sell cheap that should bolt on.... Low miles. $500 + shipping if you are interested.

From a lot of others, they say you don't really notice how worn out it is UNTIL you replace it. My 996 just felt sloppier and less dampened once it passed about the 70k mark. By 100k, I knew it was dead.

It's a slow degenerative process so it's hard to feel until you replace them as Tippy stated.

I ride on plenty of hard roads in NYC so at 65k miles I'll be looking to put on a new one this summer.

I guess I will have to find another car with less miles on it and try it out to see the difference.
Then again, why not buy and install a decent suspension

Who has a set of "JIC Cross Competition Coilovers Porsche 996 C2 99-04" for sale?

What parts actually make up the "suspension?"

Around here the term is used loosely to discuss the shock and spring assembly but for the Porsche Engineers its much more than that.

It's pretty complicated. The springs, shocks, seats, tires...

Seriously, you might just need new shocks. Or you could use this as an opportunity to upgrade to a more sporting suspension.

Yes, this is a golden opportunity for an upgrade, hehehe ...
I'll just tell my wife "they told me so on Rennlist".

My excuse to my wife for upgrading is..."it is for safety" which it is but a white lie of sort.

Obvious sign of worn shock is oil leaking/seeping from the shaft seals, inability to control the spring compression over 'rough' road.

Do you guys often see springs going bad that soon? I've not replaced springs on any car ever. Then again, I never had a car that was more than 5 years old until my current little beauty.

Springs don't really go "bad" they just get lower as they sag over time. However, Springs are cheap (usually around $275 for a set of 4) and they have to come out when you change shocks anyway so it's no extra labor to change them. Easy upgrade.

When you notice a big damping difference when the outside temperature changes.
