Default What is an overev?

Will hitting the revlimiter setoff a range1 overev? I have read that a missed shift will cause a range 2 correct?

Yes to the first question.

In most cases, yes to the second question.

To add to infanterene remarks, technically speaking an overrev is range 4 or higher on a DME report. The most common way of triggering a true overrev is when downshifting.

fast1. The 996's and 986 have only 2 over rev ranges. The 997 & 987 models have 6 ranges.

That's nothing to worry about.

Agreed. Range 1 over revs are nothing to worry about. However, Range 2 over revs can become an "oh ****" moment.

OK, you probably were asking for a little more detail per range, so here it is.

Rev limiter ranges for 997 cars (excluding GT3 & GT3 RS)
Range 1 - RPM Range 7,300 - 7,500
Range 2 - RPM Range 7,500 - 7,700
Range 3 - RPM Range 7,700 - 7,900
Range 4 - RPM Range 7,900 - 8,400
Range 5 - RPM Range 8,400 - 9,500
Range 6 - RPM Range 9,500 - 11,000

In just 250 miles or so driving my 01 it seem the 996 "spools up" quite a bit faster than my 993. I did not hit the rev limiter but got to 7,000 rpm very fast. I hit the rev limiter on my 993 only a few times.

Or even worse from "3" to "R" while moving forward.

Ray, I would imagine that not only would it die, the associated "death rattle" would cause it to burst through the rear deck lid and tumble down the roadway.
