Default Lowering car 1 1/2" - add spacers?

Looking at lowering the car about 1 1/2". Was also considering adding spacers. Any experience on whether this moves the tires out too close to the 1/4 panels/fenders? If not, would the 5 mm work best or can you go 15 - 17 on the rears? Don't want the car to look "slammed" like the ricers though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

A 1.5" drop? Isn't that an awful lot for a 996?

Yes. A 1.5" drop would most likely produce the aforementioned "slammed" look.
As a point of reference, X74 lowers a 996 ~1.18" (30mm).
As for spacers, it would depend on alignment settings, wheel width, and wheel offset as to which spacer, if any, would work.

My 996 has Bilsteein PSS9s and I am not sure how much that lowered the car. Also, I changed my brakes to Brembo GT with floating rotors. The bigger front calipers are fine with my track CCW wheels which have exactly the same offset as the 996 GT3 wheel but the original turbo twist street wheels will not fit the front. So I used 7mm spacers on the front and rear and they work fine. Honestly I cannot tell much difference in the look with or without. The 996 GT3 wheels always look better because the offsets place the wheels a bit further out. I would not use spacers for looks but I know some do. and you also will need longer lug nuts depending on the spacer you use.

I'm looking to loose the 4x4 look, so it sounds like 1" would do the trick.
Thanks for the input guys

After lowering my car, I was able to tuck turbo wheels and 295 tires on a narrow body. I highly suggest adding spacers if you're going low on nb wheels.

I don't know how low I went in comparison with stock, but it's fairly low. Here are some before/after pics:

996 GT3 (narrow body) run 295 stock. But fit 315 nittos for track work no prob. Offset and - camber make up the difference eh

Yes, offset and camber are the main points of fitting a wide wheel/tire.

If you wanna make an exact science of it, tools like this helps achieve that and takes out the guessing and/or asking game.

I have 15MM all around, I think it looks great on a NB 996. No rubbing.
