Orange Cap mod
I have seen some mention of an orange cap air box mod.
Anyone care to elaborate for a new comer? Thanks |
|
I learned about it right here...and did it too! Orange cap modded right here!
|
Haha...me too! A newbie all excited about the orange cap then.
I think I still have 2 of those magic caps laying around somewhere... I ordered a sample (of 2 pcs) and one of the members here sent me one. |
i'm not a renntech member can someone please explain this mod?
|
There must be at least a dozen threads on this... click the search button on top, and choose 'Advanced" type in 'Orange Cap' choose 996 Forum, click search.

thanx

If this a real mod may I please get a free orange plug ?
Thank you. I feel like I am calling a business and asking them to page "Mike Hunt" |
Thanks for the info.
Where do you get these magic ornage caps? |
I had forgotten that I have an Orange Cap installed in my air box. I guess that was my first mod.
|
Just did this. Didn't have a orange cap though, I used the bottom fifth of a plastic "sample" cup (yeah that's right a "pee" cup). It fit tight over the bung to which the small elbow fits. After I covered over the hole, I refit the small elbow, and clamped the whole thing down tight. You'd think I woulda taken a few picturs eh? Well I didn't and I feel kinda bad.
I don't feel so bad though about the whoop-ass noise my car makes now at big throttle openings. Around the residential streets or whatever it sounds as sedate as it always did (my wife likes it that way and if she's not complaining about my porsche like she used to with my old car then that's OK by me). Lay hard on the throttle on the highway though and people are freaking out, slamming on their brakes around me because they think hell is raining down fire on them. It's great! Damn feels faster too although I know that's just my "mind" playing tricks on me. For those of you still sctatching their heads - be aware that the small elbow does not lead into the actual air box where the air filter lives. It leads to a small compartment within the air box that just dead ends. Most cars have these "resonance" chambers now to mitigate intake noise. On my subaru and even on my old mustang, there were dirty great horn shaped things inside the fender well. Over on the Subaru board (NASIOC) they call it a "snorkus-ectomy" when you take the horn out. Similar concept...a little more noise and better air flow. Not sure if the 996 mod gives better air flow. Anyway - Nice $0 mod. Plus I got to inspect the cleanliness of my air filter...it's fine. |
Does anyone know where one can still get these orange caps? I searched the Niagara Plastics site for Part No #273-1P, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I an very curious to try out this mod. |

As mentioned in PM, I'll start looking for the cap tomorrow.
I'll put it in the mail and let you know. |
I'm in the same situation as myrmidon. Searched the Niagara Plastics site and couldn't find it and could not successfully email the rep. If anyone can help out it would be appreciated.
Thanks |
The sales rep at Niagra Plastics contacted me months after I received them. I think they finally caught on with giving away free samples.

I am the only one on the board who has not done this. :icon107: :surr:
Can someone just give me the dimensions? I have caps like that at work in just about any size. I will try to hook up some newbies if I have the size. |

Hi All,
While I no longer have my 996, when tidying up my garage I discovered that I still have a single Orange Cap (picture below). If anyone is looking for one, please PM me. Regards, Olaf https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...08f7f771e9.png |
If the opening is the same as the 997's - the cap to a Mobil One 5qt oil jug fits as well. It's not red and doesn't say Fabspeed or cost $200 but it still works.
For those that want more info - look for Helmholtz Resonator in your search. |
I did the helmholtz delete about a year ago. I went with the Oatey test plug and a 996 silicone tube off ebay. I ended up taking it off because it felt like it lost low end torque. I revisited this mod about 2 weeks ago after I cleaned the throttle body and changed the air filter. I noticed that in 4th gear when I'm going past 5,500 rpm it takes longer to rev up than without it. I have since put it back to stock and it climbs faster now. Anyone else experience this?

I used the cap to a one quart castrol oil container. Fits perfectly. then I just re-installed the stock elbow. It does make a cool noise around 5k rpm with WOT.
|
I see two popular methods for doing this: (1) Orange cap, which is no longer available, and (2) Castrol oil cap. I do not have a castrol oil bottle right now, and mainly use Mobil 1. I see some people mention a trip to Home Depot, but they didn’t share any other details which item to buy. What othef options do I have for doing the Orange Cap mod? |
Oatley 2" test plug from Home Depot or Lowes:

This might allow the elbow to be fitted over it. Or, https://www.homedepot.com/p/Oatey-2-...-100137732-_-N |
Here is my video of the Orange Cap Mod. I am loving it.
|
I don't really hear much of a difference with mine. But then again, I'm old. Nice job on the video!

I've read no performance loss or gain... Few people saying otherwise.
In another thread I started here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...resonator.html @Porschetech3 did say there was no gain or loss - if my memory serves me correctly... |
I bought the 1-1/2' knockout cap, from Home Depot, after the 2" was too big, and while it almost seems too small, with the lip it fits perfectly. I took the car for a ride, and definitely heard a difference in the 5K and up range. It had a very nice sound. I felt no difference in the power band. When I returned, I popped the hose off to make sure the cap had not moved, and it was still sitting perfectly.
All in all, a pretty cool mod for no time, and no money. |
Here's the other end of the scale...
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Porsche-...k/322582790907 Have one of these on order - I didn't like the idea of having a plastic cap in the intake and had been looking for a metal one. Thanks to @cds72911 for finding and sharing this. |
Hi Dan....I saw this on another thread, and considered it, but first wanted to see if it really did anything before considering spending the 65 dollars. I will admit, there is a part of me that would like to have that nicely machined piece of art, but want to see if I even keep the mod. I am getting a Fister mod done to my exhaust in a couple of weeks, so will decide then. Good luck, I hope you enjoy the new sound!

Probably a good way to go, I thought if I didn't like it i'd just resell it here locally - lucky for you guys its $65 for me with the exchange rate and GST ebay is now charging it became $105AUD :grr:

The 2" works if you're replacing the silicone hose.
If you're staying with the stock hose, you'll need the smaller one. I first tried with duct tape and then decided it sounded a little better. I went with 2" and new hose, before I gave it away. I now have Fabspeed for cool noise and cool looks. No, with the orange cap mod you'll see no change in HP or Torque, but staying with what most "high performance" parts companies say: TexSquirrel High Performance Bottle Cap Mod https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...70399aaf00.png Up to 10HP and 15 ft/lbs of Torque increase* * Performance increase is not guaranteed. Results may vary. Not responsible for any damage caused by misuse. Please don't order one from me! |

The SAMCO one is the most complete kit out there IMO and has the breather hose built in for X51 and automatics.
