Orange Cap mod

I have seen some mention of an orange cap air box mod.
Anyone care to elaborate for a new comer?
Thanks

I learned about it right here...and did it too! Orange cap modded right here!

Haha...me too! A newbie all excited about the orange cap then.
I think I still have 2 of those magic caps laying around somewhere...
I ordered a sample (of 2 pcs) and one of the members here sent me one.

There must be at least a dozen threads on this... click the search button on top, and choose 'Advanced" type in 'Orange Cap' choose 996 Forum, click search.

I had forgotten that I have an Orange Cap installed in my air box. I guess that was my first mod.

Just did this. Didn't have a orange cap though, I used the bottom fifth of a plastic "sample" cup (yeah that's right a "pee" cup). It fit tight over the bung to which the small elbow fits. After I covered over the hole, I refit the small elbow, and clamped the whole thing down tight. You'd think I woulda taken a few picturs eh? Well I didn't and I feel kinda bad.

I don't feel so bad though about the whoop-ass noise my car makes now at big throttle openings. Around the residential streets or whatever it sounds as sedate as it always did (my wife likes it that way and if she's not complaining about my porsche like she used to with my old car then that's OK by me). Lay hard on the throttle on the highway though and people are freaking out, slamming on their brakes around me because they think hell is raining down fire on them. It's great!

Damn feels faster too although I know that's just my "mind" playing tricks on me.

For those of you still sctatching their heads - be aware that the small elbow does not lead into the actual air box where the air filter lives. It leads to a small compartment within the air box that just dead ends. Most cars have these "resonance" chambers now to mitigate intake noise. On my subaru and even on my old mustang, there were dirty great horn shaped things inside the fender well. Over on the Subaru board (NASIOC) they call it a "snorkus-ectomy" when you take the horn out. Similar concept...a little more noise and better air flow. Not sure if the 996 mod gives better air flow.

Anyway - Nice $0 mod. Plus I got to inspect the cleanliness of my air filter...it's fine.

Does anyone know where one can still get these orange caps? I searched the Niagara Plastics site for Part No #273-1P, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore.

I an very curious to try out this mod.
