I see two popular methods for doing this: (1) Orange cap, which is no longer available, and (2) Castrol oil cap. I do not have a castrol oil bottle right now, and mainly use Mobil 1. I see some people mention a trip to Home Depot, but they didn’t share any other details which item to buy.

What othef options do I have for doing the Orange Cap mod?

Oatley 2" test plug from Home Depot or Lowes:

Can I still install the stock air tube over that test plug? It looks kind of bulky.

EDIT: I found this tread which gave institutions how to request the sample.

This might allow the elbow to be fitted over it.

Here is my video of the Orange Cap Mod. I am loving it.

I don't really hear much of a difference with mine. But then again, I'm old. Nice job on the video!

FYI....The 2" knockout test cap is too big, and will not work. I will try the 1-1/2" next, and give feedback.

I did the helmholtz delete about a year ago. I went with the Oatey test plug and a 996 silicone tube off ebay. I ended up taking it off because it felt like it lost low end torque. I revisited this mod about 2 weeks ago after I cleaned the throttle body and changed the air filter. I noticed that in 4th gear when I'm going past 5,500 rpm it takes longer to rev up than without it. I have since put it back to stock and it climbs faster now. Anyone else experience this?

This is interesting feedback. I see a lot of people asking about removing the helmholtz to theoretically increase air flow over the stock filter.

I've read no performance loss or gain... Few people saying otherwise.

In another thread I started here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...resonator.html

@Porschetech3 did say there was no gain or loss - if my memory serves me correctly...

I bought the 1-1/2' knockout cap, from Home Depot, after the 2" was too big, and while it almost seems too small, with the lip it fits perfectly. I took the car for a ride, and definitely heard a difference in the 5K and up range. It had a very nice sound. I felt no difference in the power band. When I returned, I popped the hose off to make sure the cap had not moved, and it was still sitting perfectly.

All in all, a pretty cool mod for no time, and no money.

Here's the other end of the scale...

Have one of these on order - I didn't like the idea of having a plastic cap in the intake and had been looking for a metal one.

Thanks to @cds72911 for finding and sharing this.

Hi Dan....I saw this on another thread, and considered it, but first wanted to see if it really did anything before considering spending the 65 dollars. I will admit, there is a part of me that would like to have that nicely machined piece of art, but want to see if I even keep the mod. I am getting a Fister mod done to my exhaust in a couple of weeks, so will decide then. Good luck, I hope you enjoy the new sound!

Ouch!!!!

The 2" works if you're replacing the silicone hose.
If you're staying with the stock hose, you'll need the smaller one.
I first tried with duct tape and then decided it sounded a little better.
I went with 2" and new hose, before I gave it away.
I now have Fabspeed for cool noise and cool looks.
No, with the orange cap mod you'll see no change in HP or Torque, but staying with what most "high performance" parts companies say:

TexSquirrel High Performance Bottle Cap Mod
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...70399aaf00.png
Up to 10HP and 15 ft/lbs of Torque increase*

* Performance increase is not guaranteed. Results may vary. Not responsible for any damage caused by misuse.

Please don't order one from me!
