I have wondered the same. The Porsche Red Book has option 513 as lumbar support, passenger, adjustable. There is no mention of 537.

My car has 513 and 537, however, I only have adjustable lumbar on the passenger side and the same cap on the driver side, which to me seemed strange.

This is what I can get on the option decoder:
Code Option Description
513 Lumbar support - right seat
513 Driver's Seat Lumbar Support
537 Left seat with positrol and lumbar

This is directly from the 996 PET:

513 Back support - right seat
537 Seating position control for comfort seat, Left
538 Seating position control for comfort seat, Right
586 Back support - left seat

So the way I read this is that if you have 537 (and maybe 538) you have electric seat adjustments for the seat bottom (raise/lower/tilt and forward/back) and seat back control (tilt forward/recline).

You would need to have option code 586 to have lumbar control on the driver's seat. I am betting that Newport996 has option 586 on his sticker (if the seats he showed in his pic are the original seats).

Thanks Tim, you are correct, that makes sense. What does not make sense to me is why there are so many cars with lumber support on the passenger side only.

Just a "wild guess" here, but maybe Porsche over estimated the demand for Europe buyers wanting lumbar for their Driver's side (right side) and just stuck them in North America cars. I know, I know, it sounds crazy, but it IS possible!

Other thatn that, I have no idea why there are so many cars with lumber support on the passenger side only.

Newport - There is not a 588 listed in the PET. Also, I can't find a 588 on any of the other Option Code sources either.

BTW - the passenger lumbar support is option code 513.

It may be 588 on your sticker, but I can't find an associated option to match it. I know that there have been a few "mystery" (i.e. undocumented from Porsche)codes that some owers have posted.

+1

Thats why I have not switched to sport seats....i am trying to figure out how to custom make full power sport seats with the lumbar support.....I wonder if I got the seat backs, used my seat bottoms, and put the lumbar stuff in from my seats backs into the sport seat seat back shells, then had the whole seat reupholstered to match....sounds expensive, but I could get my sport seats, and keep the full power functionality....and the comfort of the lumbar supports....hmmm....
