Quiet Tires?
OK most of you know I have two race cars I get my speed fix in so don't give me too much crap about wanting my cab to be a little quiet and comfortable. I suppose some is appropriate.
I've done a search but most of the posts are pretty old. What tires are people finding to be fairly quiet and reasonably comfortable?
Thanks,
Jim

Before I get flamed here I will state that I was looking for a reasonably priced tire to replace my rear PZeros only as my fronts were less than 50% worn. I checked Tire Rack and went with Sumitomos. They were only $137 ea for a 265-35ZR18 and if I didn't like them, I'd replace all 4 with something better.
First off they are very quiet and compliant, especially after the worn out PZeros. I ran up and down the canyons a few times hitting some turns fairly aggressively and it seems like they oversteered a bit more than the worn Pirellis but they had less than 20 street miles on them and were inflated at 35PSI which I think was too low.
I them inflated all my tires to spec, 39 and 44 and have been driving around like that for a few days and now I find low speed turns are fine but turns taken above around 75mph and higher feel skitterish. It's like I put in too much steering input and the car reacts accordingly. I've been trying to sort this and I don't think it has anything to do with the new rears but I've run the fronts at a lower PSI for so long and then inflated them to 39PSI. I believe the higher pressure actually made the footprint much smaller and makes steering very sensitive to any inputs. I will either let the fronts wear in evenly or deflate them slightly to get my handling back.
Another reason for my Sumitomo choice is that they make Dunlop tires in their Japanese manufacturing plant for motorcycles and they seem to be good quality, and I put a set of fronts on my wifes Boxster and the seem to be very quiet and handle well. So far I'm happy with my choice, but I may try Dunlops or even Avons next. I'm sure you know that these are not N Porsche approved.

I have had good results with Michelin Pilot sports on my 986. They wear well, have high grip and are quiet.
On my other 996 I have P-Zero's which seem to offer pretty good grip but are very noisy. When the P-Zero's give up the ghost, (they are almost to the wear bars now) I'm going to slap some MPS's on the 911 too.

i just bought a set of Potenza RE-01R's. this is the quietest (and most comfortable) extreme performance tire i've ever owned. also VERY VERY sticky. also, bridgestone currently has a $100 rebate program when you buy a set of 4 potenzas AND are a member of PCA.

Adding a different tire report for anyone interested.
I'm on my second set of the cost effective Kumho Ecsta SPTs also ordered from TireRack. They are very quiet except for the fronts at 15-35mph and plenty grippy for daily driving. Downside is that both sets of rears have really bad overnight flat-spotting and it takes a while for them to go back to round. Fiddled with pressures but no improvement. I had great experiences with other Kumhos on my Audi S4 and 968 P-car, but will go a different route next time.
