I know that the tank is at least 15+ gallons. Last weekend at the track, my fuel light came on and I stayed out for a few more laps. When the miles to empty went to --- (shortly after hitting 9 miles), I figured that I'd better come in. I was able to empty 3 5-gallon fuel jugs without any problem.

I do believe that the tank is 16.5 - 16.9 gallons. I guess I could have gotten in 1-2 more laps!

What am I missing? Does the fuel indicator needle go below zero too into the red area?

Yup, me too.

The TSB warns:
"Consequence: THE VEHICLE COULD RUN OUT OF FUEL CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER. "

That's what I would call an extremely logical and well thought out conclusion.

Hi Rick....I called the dealership and they said its a recall thing to with some valves. I am gonna take it in next week.
Sooo...I am not sure if these "valves" do not let us put more in....or they make the fuel indicator go crazy and it indicates empty when there is still about 5 gallons left. Will update next week. I suggest you call the dealership too.

I always have trouble at my local Chevron, just filling up to 3/4 of a tank...At other stations I don't have this problem.

So here is the update of my fuel indicator woes.

Mechanic 1 : The C4S tank is saddle bag shaped because of the AWD hardware in there. So it is a little more complicated than a C2 tank. Said it was a computer calibration issue and he did not have the equipment.
Mechanic 2 : Your fuel sending unit is messed up. He charged my $450 for labor and parts and replaced the fuel sending unit and did some recalibration.
I still have the same problem. I get only around 200 miles from Full to Empty. There is more fuel in there but the guage just shows empty. Mechanic 2 says ..."If the fuel sending unit does not fix it....you will have to replace the instrument cluster".

Do I believe this guy???????

When is the light suppose to come on in the 99? I run it down low looks below the 0 and still no light. I know on my 951 that I run it down below the 0 and still go a little til the light comes on.

If you have the OBC (On Board Computer) just click it a couple times until it get to the Miles left. I always leave like that...always.

Wanted to bring closure to this. My fuel gauge issue is now fixed. The independent shop replaced the sending unit, calibrated it 3 times etc and it did not fix it. Finally took it to the dealership and they had to "calibrate the cluster". Turns out the cluster was not set to USA as the country and this was causing the fuel gauge to misbehave!!!
Now I can put 15+ gallons into the tank and am a happy camper!!

Sounds like your Indy Mechanic #2 owes you $450!

My manual say 16.5 gallons, but it also says when the light comes on that approximately 3 gallons are still left in reserve.

Desidon -
was the recalibration of cluster by the dealer to USA as country considered part of a recall? Did they charge you for this service? I have same issue & wondering if it also affects the MPG calculation of the OBC because supposedly I only get ~ 15 mpg.
Glad you got your problem fixed & stay away from mechanic #2
