Default Difficulty of 99 911 oil change....

So, its almost that time and Im dispute whether on taking my p car to the dealer and being raked for a filter and oil. I have driven domestics in the past and would change the oil myself and save cash. Is the process on the porsche basically the same. Is the filter and oil readilly available at the checker (etc.). Any special tools, tricks?

Also I have read threads discussing oil. What does the dealer use when they change it?

Thanks.

AS a DIY, it's easy as pie....
Unless, like me you manage to strip out the frozen drain plug with the allen wrench.

I would buy the filter from the dealer (saves time) because it comes with the crush ring you will need for the change. It would be helpful if you had the oil filter wrench, but I used a strap wrench for my first oil change. You can pick up the oil at Autozone, Pepboys or any similar store. I use Mobil 1 0W-40 (there are some that will dispute this) .

Probably one of the easiest oil changes I've done.

Very accessible drain plug and filter housing.

I use some rhino ramps on my sloping driveway, and just back the car onto the ramps to give myself a little more working space under the car.

Also, use a piece of old carpet or cardboard to catch the drips - that oil comes out real fast on this car, and there's plenty of it!

Also, get a funnel for easy re-filling, if you don't have one already. Saves spills and speeds the process.

0W40 Mobil1.

You'll kick yourself it's so easy!

Default difficulty 99 911 oil change

I have a 2001 996 and a severe stripped oil plug. I have tried to use 2 different extractors and the magnetic drain plug from LN Engineering keeps rounding out as I am now 2sizes larger than 8mm. I basically keep grinding metal out of the hole. short of drilling a hole into twitch the risk of getting metal fragments into the pan do any of you have any good ideas? Ive had 3-4 good bites on it but that damn plug won't budge!

Frustrated

If all else fails, take the whole pan off. Extract the plug after removal. If you still can't, buy a new or used pan.

You will need to buy a tube of sealant to reinstall the pan. There is no gasket.

Once you get it extracted get a new LN magnetic drain plug and be sure to use an 8mm hex bit and not torx and torque to 19 ft lbs. I avoid the whole round off risk by using this:

Good luck.
