I had the RMS fix in the summer of 2005 and haven't had the problem since.

I had a new RMS under CPO at 50k in April. Just took it in for the 75k service, and they tell me it needs another RMS...
I'll call them back to check they will be using the new seal, before I go off warranty at 100k some time in 2007.

Fello car nutz,
Shopping for a 996-2 Tip Cab (roomier vs. coupe).
What is the greatest duration & highest mileage covered by CPO limited warranty?
Are Tips more, less, or about equally prone to RMS leak?
Thanks all, & happy new year!

I see less tips with rms leaks, but ive never run the numbers, it could just be due to seeing less tiptronic cars in general. But i think that not having the input shaft pushing on the the crank reduces the the rms leaks

IIRC, CPO covers up to 100,000 miles total, or two years after you purchase the car.

I believe CPO covers the car for two additional years after the original warranty expires, up to 100K miles. Used car purchase date is irrelevant.

Looks like we're both right. From the Porsche USA website:
- If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total , whichever comes first
- If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first

<user="Noob", question="Potentially Obvious">
What does RMS stand for?
</user>

I have searched the forums for 'RMS', and understand that leaks on numerous people's cars, but cannot find what RMS actually refers to.

Rear Main Seal - also known as the crank seal.

maybe people aren't complaining about it much because it is nothing catastrophic nor expensive to replace and that it really only is a LEAK.

There is a saying about Triumph motorcycles that comes to mind. "If it's not leaking oil, then it's out of oil."

Like Harleys - they don't leak - they just "mark their turf"

Why not "Leaky vehicles equal poor design?"
