Thanks. So the 3.8 was first introduced as an '05 model year engine?

No 3.8 L engines in any 996 P-cars. 3.8 L engine is in the 997 S, 997 (non-S) has 3.6 L engine.

Didn't the 996 have a 3.4 engine until 02?

Yes the naturally aspirated models all did.
