Yes, but mine hangs down below the fender next to the tire so it really does not have a chance to scratch the paint if you are careful.

Ciao Fabry,

There is a way to hold the fuel "cap", I will try to make a picture to make it more obvious.
You have a little plastic wire to hold the cap and it is possible to hold it on the small "door", there is a hook that is designed for that. If I have time I will try to post a picture...

Have a good day.

I think I understand... You are looking for a fuel cap with the teather as your fuel cap does not have one. In reviewing the parts catalog, it looks like you need part number:

Fuel cap with clip: 996.201.241.02

My 1997 has a cap that has 2 slots to hang on the flap, if that is what you mean.

This style was used 1997-2000. In 2001 Porsche went to the tether style.

Then a few years ago there was a gas cap recall for 1998 to I think 2002. You go a new gas cap, the tether style, but the tether was removed if you had a 1998-2000 because there was no place to hang the tether.

1997 was not subject to the recall and that is why I still have the original style cap.

Tool Pants, thanks for the pic. You're using a 1997 cap on a 996? How's your 996 not subject to the gas cap recall?

So doing some more research and to the above point by Tool Pants:

Cap 996.201.241.01 superceeds 996.201.241.00
Cap 996.201.241.03 superceeds 996.201.241.02

So maybe he should get cap 996.201.241.01 as that sounds like the cap you have that was not affected?

I have a 1997 Boxster. On a 1998 up Boxster as part of the emission system the fuel tank is put under pressure to check for leaks in vapor hoses. 1997 did not have this feature so there was no recall for 1997. In fact, before the recall for the cap, Porsche just tried to replace the O-ring in the original cap.

I would have to check around to see if you can even get the cap I have. Just think of all those caps like mine that were thrown away during the recall. Maybe they are in Italy....

Doh! Forgot the Boxster shares the same fender lines as the 996. Aren't I the bonehead...

In row PET 00 and 01 still shows up, with the note that when 00 is used up it is replaced by 01. I have 00 so these are the caps with the notches to hang on the flap. This version is no longer on USA PET, which makes sense due to the recall.

02 and 03 are the tethered versions. 02 is on row and 03 is on USA PET, but this might have changed over the years. The recall was done with 03, with the tether removed unless you asked for it to be left on.

I use to watch them throw away the old caps, and pull the tether off the new cap. So I "rescued" a 00 cap from a 1999 996 and the tether from the 03 cap when this was going on a few years ago.

Boxstir owners also go a sticker near the emission sticker to show that the recall had been done.
