Default Help me, 996 Bretheren...

...I have a beautiful 2002 C2 that I really, really like. It has only 11,000 miles on it, and it still looks showroom new. It is a weekend car, and I really do enjoy it. The 996 is more car than I need, I know, but...

...I am really drooling over the GT3RS. I know it is going to be a truly super car and I think I will be in a position to get one when they come here. But I know that the RS is way, way, way more car than I will ever need. Is there any merit to having one? Should I be content with my gorgeous 996? So many cars, too little time. Please advise.

You might want to check the GT3 and 996TT sections, there have been a number of threads there comparing those two models and the pros/cons of each. The RS would make the distinction even greater.
The recent edition of Excellence magazine had a write-up on the new GT3 as have a number of other magazines. This month's Road and Track has a piece on the GT3RS.

Yes, I am getting my info from Excellence and from my local dealer.

The Good:
GT1-derived motor
Wide body
Lots of carbon fiber to lighten the car
Porsche doesn't make bad RS's
Viper or signal green will be a standard color

The Bad:
Sunroof is a must
PASM (makes me nervous)
19" wheels standard (no need to go bigger than 18" IMHO)

The Ugly:
Likely $20K-$30K more than GT3

So why should I keep my 996? Come on, seriously. Don't let me do this!

If I was making the leap to a 997, personally I would choose the new 997TT over the GT3RS. I'm like you: I love having a sunroof and a backseat to stuff the kids in. The more creature comforts it has, the more I'll use it everyday and that's the whole point of having a p-car. Besides, I know that a 997TT would be way more car than I could ever use or even learn to exploit completely. Meanwhile I'm still very happy with my 996.

Let's be honest...nobody "needs" a Porsche. Furthermore, the 996 is an incredible car that offers more performance than 98% of all passenger cars ever made (past and present).

That being said if you have the means you only live once........get the RS.....

If its a weekend car, and a non tracker, i say look at TT. Yes the GT3 RS is very very rare, but thats because its purpose built for the race track. If getting the GT3 will make you happy then go for it, but your car is 4 years old and had 11 K , something tells me you will enjoy a TT way way more.
Good luck
