Question To those in/around Chicago

Any experiences with The Porsche Exchange's service department? Good or bad? I don't know quite how I feel. I brought my car in for a problem with the gascap door not closing only to pick it up 6 miles on it. The Service Mgr was very nice and said that they have to take it to another location where they actually service the car. To me, that's opening up a can of worms as I can just imagine some 20-something homeboy ripping the car to redline I bought the car there and was very happy with the sales experience but need some input on their service department please.

Chicago996,

This story should answer your question about what to expect from the Exchange. One of my friends normally has his '99 996 worked on by a Porsche specialist outside of the dealer network who does outstanding work (he's in Libertyville - you'll figure out who). Anyway, my friend couldn't get in to see the specialists so he took his car to the Exchange. After the work at the Exchange was completed my friend later went back to the specialist regarding an unrelated issue. The specialists mechanics noticed and showed my friend that the Exchanges mechanics had taken a metal etcher and scrawled "---- Sucks!" on the engine cover or oil pan of his 996. THe four letter word is the Specialist's first name.

Unbelievable right. Needless to say I wouldn't get near the place with a 10' pole.

Well, that makes me upset but somehow doesn't surprise me. I bought the car from there but maybe I'll try Motorwerks in Barrington for service. I should be able to take it to any dealer I want (I think). Libertyville is far otherwise but I'm curious to find out about the specialist you were alluding to.

I bought my 911 (used) from The Exchange almost 2 years ago. The sales experience was excellent.

Before purchasing it, the sales staff stated they would send it through their service department for a PPI (no charge to me). Since it was no charge, I did not object.

The PPI came back showing about $6500 worth of work was needed to get the car back to excellent condition. Based on my 911 experience and several detailed inspections, I didn't think that much work was needed. My mechanic agreed after many discussions with him. To The Exchange's sales department's credit, they went to bat and gave me an excellent deal. I couldn't pass it up even with the laundry list of stuff that needed to be done. I figured with the discount on the selling price I received, I could cover the repairs and still be O.K. money wise on the car.

After getting the car home, my mechanic went over the car with a fine tooth comb and I only spent $1500 on it to get it into mint shape. Most of that cost was for a normal 30k service. The Exchange's Service department did correctly identify all of the minor problems with the car. But, none of the major, high dollar items that were listed on the PPI were actually wrong.

I use MotorWerks for service. They've added several after-market items lately. The service manager is Scott Feinglass and my mechanic is Gene Durbeck. Excellent all around group. The Specialist in Libertyville is Perfect Power.

Good Luck with all.

Motorwerks of Barrington are a good bunch of guys.
Brink and Scott have taken good care of clients with tuning and service issues.

Motorwerks in Barrington it is. I just wished that they gave me a good deal so that I could have bought from them as well. Thanx for all your input guys, and GonzoP, I'm going to ask for your mechanic to work if possible. Thanks again. FWIW, I've had good experiences with the Exchange over 16 years with three p-cars and an Audi.

They've even gone to bat for me with PCNA to cover leaky power steering that was out of warranty. Saved me 4 or 5 hundred bucks.

Gonzo, your friend ought to take the car back to the Exchange, and ask for Bruce Semersky, the GM.

I'm sure he'll make good on it, and probably fire the a-hole who did it.

Chi 996, as to the six miles, they are building a new center on 41, and the service facility is elsewhere on 41, so are working out of three locations temporarily. The miles are explainable if you dropped it off at the old building along the tracks in Highland Park. How they were driven, who knows.

I also have a P-car from Motorworks, and my experience there has been comparable to my experiences at the Exchange. I agree Gene's very good.

For track-related work, I'm very happy with Peter Fischer in Barrington.

For what it's worth, here has been my experience in Chicago. I ordered my C4S from Rizza in Orland Park. They are closest to where I live and gave me the best deal. Great experience.

Over the past 2+ years Rich Haddon has worked on my '89 928GT. He was at Rizza but moved to Lynch in Chicago early this summer. He has been fantastic with the 928 (even with custom work), and guys like that are tough to find--even in a big city.

I have no idea what the service department is like at Lynch but Rich has always been a straight shooter. . .the 928 has been flawless this past summer so I haven't been to see him there. Thankfully!
