Experiences on eBay Motors
As many of you know, eBay Motors has become quite a forum for posting and checking out P-car's for sale. Although I find there to be a number of genuine owners out there that are looking to offload their cars for decent prices, I am increasingly concerned about the stories I am hearing (on this forum and others) about how people have been sold cars that have (a little bit, completely, or totally) been misrepresented by the sellers. I know there is some recourse available through eBay, but that hardly provides tremendous consollation when you've just bought a $60 - $90K car.
Just wondering what experience people have had on eBay Motors, and whether any of you would actually buy a car as expensive as a Porsche through the auction website (and perhaps even sight unseen).
Regards.

I gave it a try, but chickened out after the carfax came back with a potential odo rollback. I realized I was just NOT comfortable with buying a $45K car sight unseen.
That said, it is fun to check it out every once in a while.

If you are worried, go see the car. If its a good deal or a car you want is it worth a couple hundred for an airline ticker or a drive and a night in a hotel for a car you want or a great deal. We are talking about $40-100k cars!

Ebay is a cheap way to get your car in front of a bunch of folks and I have used it in combination with ads on the PCA Mart and Rennlist. I have sold three Porsches directly or indirectly on Ebay and they are as follows:
964 C2 mint with 30,000 miles
'01 Boxster S with 921 miles
'00 996 C4 Millennium with 10,000 miles
Also I bought the Millennium from a Porsche dealer that had advertised on Ebay....It is not any different from buying or selling at long distance through PCA....you take the same safety steps you would with any " sight unseen " transaction..
Selling can eat up a lot of time and I had some false starts; however, with all three Porsches knowledgable buyers came through at or above market prices.
Good Luck <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Interesting question.
I'll have more info next week but this is how my transaction transpired.
I have been following E-bay for a few months. I've located some very nice cars. We to see a few of them. The pictures provided were very nice. I ran a Carfax and everything was as it was stated. I chose not to bid but called the dealer directly, it was very easy. I found an enclosed transporter out of Florida. The car is in Houston, they will pick the car up Thursday.
I should have it Sunday or Monday.
I'll post the facts as soon as the car arrives.
The car is a 2001 996 Twin Turbo Tip, Silver with Black interior, 2813 miles.

Tim,
Glad to hear that at the pre-sale experience was uneventful. Congratulations on your new car, and look forward to seeing if the car is exactly "as advertised." Be sure to retain a good transport company, as I've heard of some horror stories from people who tried to save a few hundred dollars. Not worth it on a 100K car.
Regards.
