Post What's the deal with the oil countdown?

Everyone knows if you turn the key to the on position and wait a few moments, the on-board computer will calculate the oil level. When I did it a week ago it started counting down from like 10 seconds. Yesterday, I get in the car and do the same thing and it starts counting down from 12 minutes. What's up?

I believe has to do with the temperature of your engine. I think its best to do it after the cars cooled down (oil drips back down too), like in the morning. This is all in the owners manual.

If the car is not stationary for a minimum amount of time, the oil does not have a chance to return to the pan to be measured and the smart little brain knows that.
