Default OEM Brakes

Is Brembo the OEM supplier of the brakes for our 996s? I was reading the performance products catalog and it said that Brembo was, but I wasn't sure. Any ideas? Thanks

Aren't the rotors by Zimmerman? (Rhetorical question since I know the answer)

No, Otto Zimmermann Gmbh has NOT been an OE supplier to Porsche since at least the mid-eighties (possibly earlier before the 964 if at all, ATE had been a supplier since the 356 days and Brembo was at one time also...) SHW has had an exclusive contract since ~1996 but have possibly been supplying them for longer than that. Zimmerman make "OEM Compatible" but not OE rotors and the stuff they sell is cheap crap with horrible wear characteristics.

How do you know SHW is the current supplier for rotors/discs?

On the message boards it has been said over and over it is Zimmermann, but I have always wondered if it is true.

The Zimmermann rotors on my SC are doing fine. The fronts lasted an entire track year before I changed them. The rears are still the originals. Recommendations on a better rotor?

In 2003 (@ TechTactics) I was told by a (now retired) employee of Porsche. Fast-forward to a couple of months ago when PAG/PCNA released a supplier/vendor list and Zimmerman were not on it so I asked SHW. They couldn't tell me exactly how far back (other than they started supplying Porsche in 1979) so I just asked someone else who's job it is to know and I paraphrased what they told me in the message above. The only true documentation would be to look at the 996/997 supplier list which I believe was published in Automotive Design News. I don' t think I kept the issue but I will look for it at home anyway.

It would be interesting to see a list confirming the supplier of rotors, and for all I know there could be several depending on the model.

I have been Boxstering for 7 years and a common question is, who makes the rotors and is Zimmermann a good replacement. I always responded that it has been "reported" that the OEM rotors are made by Zimmermann because that is what people claim on the internet. I have never seen anything in writing to confirm if this is true or not.

I have seen 2 brief list of suppliers within the past year, and the rotors were not mentioned. I looked around the SHW site and they do not identify who they make rotors for. I also tried this on the German Zimmermann site a few years ago and there was no info.

So if SHW makes the rotors. Can they be bought from a third party?

It will depend on who owns the tooling for the rotors. If they are owned by PAG than there is probably very little chance of SHW being allowed to sell anything through a 3rd-party. I will try to find out.
