Post Absolute Newbie to Porsche, please help with buying first 996!!

Hi all,

I am an absolute newbie to the world of Porsche, and have only been reading the board for the last two days, so please help me with a couple questions.

1. Based on todays market and economy, if I am getting a new '02 C2 Coupe, what kind of deals are out there on price. I know that I can get better than MSRP, but how much better?

2. Besides the normal 1 year/12k mile maintenance, the 15k and 30k mile maintenances, should I expect any other costs of ownership?

Just a note, I test drove a '99, '00, and '02 today, and they are amazing! I may be losing some hp to the Vette I just sold, but the feeling that I got driving the car was priceless.

Thank you!!
BB

Welcome...Your topic is not new. Why don't you give Rennlist FAQ a try and see what's been said on the subject. There are so many variables, ie, what part of the country are you in; how do you want your car optioned; are you buying something off the floor or ordering it; etc.etc.

Thanks Don! I overlooked the FAQ section. I don't, however, see anything related to purchasing the car. Could someone give me a pointer to it?

Thumbs up

BB,

Greetings from Colorado. I just ordered an '02 C2 Cabriolet at $2,000 under MSRP. Other local dealers are getting list.

If you haven't finalized the sale of your vette, yet, you might try to run its sale through your Porsche dealer as a trade & them selling the vette to your buyer, so as your having to pay sales tax on the net cash part of the trade instead of the total price of the Porsche.

I Hope this is helpful; best of luck!

Richard

Only other thing to consider is tires. You'll use up a few sets between those maintenance intervals!

Unless you absolutely have to have a '02 C2 why not consider a '00 or '01.....there even a few "new" '01s that can be bought for less than invoice.
Don gave you good advice.....in summary to get the best deal, you need to be prepared to shop anywhere with cash in hand for something in stock. New build slots for the C2 are limited due to the C4S and Targa and Cabs....
For a low option C2, you can get $4,000 to $6,000 plus off of MSRP....I have a '02 C2 due in May that I might not take because I just bought a mint '00 Millennium C4 a few weeks ago...

If this is your first Porsche, I would really consider a nice used example....there will be a new model in a few years.

Hmm, I wish I had thought of this a week ago!

I was going for a low mileage '00 model, but after driving the '02 model, I have got to have that one! $4k-$6k off is perfect. That puts the car I want right in my sweet spot for price!

Is there a list of "supporting dealers" anywhere? On the Vette forum, we had a list of about 10 dealers that were outstanding, and who would always treat you right . . .

The discount range was for cars in stock!!!!!....I don't know about out of the SouthEast ...
The following are dealers I know about and or have used in the past:

Champion
SunCoast
Brumos
Hendricks
Paramount
Fairfield( Conn.)
Reeves
Lancaster
Beverly Hills Porsche

Look in the back of AutoWeek, duPont Reg.... also check their websites...I am sure there others in the middle, south west and left coast....where you can find a willing seller...frankly for a few $1,000 I would shop at home!

Good Luck

BB1,
Unless your getting bad service, I would always recommend on trying to buy at your local dealer.
Call around and get an idea on what cars are going for and lastly submit them to your local dealer to be competitive.
Your local dealer is the one who you want the relationship with. They are the ones who will take care of you if you need "goodwill" issues, etc.
Dealers usually will take care of someone who takes care of them.
Just go in there and negotiate a good "deal".
Good Luck, Matt

Berkley, I agree completely! The price difference would have to warrant the distance (or shipping costs).

Matt, great advice. My local dealer is one of only 15 premier dealers in the country (at least that is what they are telling me), and they are willing to meet any deal I can find. BUT they are sold out to the point where I can't even order the car and get it until July. That is a long time!!!

Thanks for all the info guys! And thanks to the guys that emailed me privately too!!

I got $3,300 off MSRP on an '02 cab that I ordered last July for Sept. build and delivery in Oct. Subsequently (especially after Sept. 11), people on this board reported discounts of 4%-6% off MSRP. I have a feeling that the farther we get from Sept. 11 and as the economy is supposedly coming back, the discounts might become harder to come buy. I think it helps to try to find a dealer at the end of the month who hasn't yet sold his allocation; he has more incentive to deal so that he knows he has a car sold that he doesn't have to carry on his lot when it comes in.

With respect to maintenance costs, I had a '99 996 for three years and 55k miles and, except for tires, there were no additional maintenace costs apart from the recommended services. The car was a daily driver for my wife and I and never once gave us any problem.

Having had both a '99 and an '02 996, I can say that the latter is certainly improved in terms of power, torque, handling and interior appointments. However, as other have noted, you can probably get a better deal on an '00 or '01.
